Chargers ranked in preseason football poll

When the Edison High football team opens its 2007 season Friday against Diamond Ranch, it will do so with a preseason ranking of No. 5 in the CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division poll.

The Southern Section office in Los Alamitos released the initial division polls Tuesday.

The Chargers’ season-opening opponent, Diamond Ranch, received votes in the Southwest Division poll but didn’t crack the top 10. Huntington Beach also received votes in the poll. The Oilers were one of six teams to receive votes in the first balloting of the season.

A year ago, Edison finished runner-up to the Pac-5 crown and defending division champion Orange Lutheran begins defense of its title at No. 4 in the poll.

Mater Dei opens the season ranked No. 1 in the Pac-5 Division.

Defending champion El Dorado begins the new season again ranked No. 1 in the Southwest Division poll.

Pac-5 Division: 1. Mater Dei (Trinity, 8-3); 2.Long Beach Poly (Moore, 11-2); 3. Notre Dame/Sherman Oaks (Serra, 11-1); 4. Orange Lutheran (Trinity, 14-1); 5. Edison (Sunset, 11-3); 6. Vikings Baseball Club to hold tryout Tuesday

The H.B. Vikings Baseball Club, a youth travel team, will hold tryouts next Tuesday.

The tryout session begins at 5:30 p.m. and will be at Marina High’s freshman baseball field.

Team coaches will evaluate players for its 13-year-old division team.
