BRIEFS:UCI remains perfect

IRVINE — Freshman outside hitter Kari Pestolesi led all players with a career-high 23 kills to help the UC Irvine women’s volleyball team defeat Wyoming 29-31, 30-27, 23-30, 30-25, 15-8 Saturday, as the Anteaters won the UC Irvine/Nike Invitational at Crawford Court.

Three players for UC Irvine (6-0) were named to the all-tournament team. Junior libero Devon Sutherland captured Most Valuable Player honors after totaling 38 digs in three matches, also matching a career-high five service aces twice in tournament action. Sophomore opposite hitter Alexandra Filkins and senior middle blocker Kristin Kelley were also named to the all-tournament team. Filkins had 23 kills in three matches, hitting .545 in the tournament, while Kelley totaled 22 kills and 11 block assists.

Against Wyoming, Pestolesi added 11 digs and junior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman totaled 19 kills and 16 digs for her first double-double match of the season. Sutherland topped all players with 22 digs and sophomore setter Taryn Robertson had 58 assists and seven total blocks.

The Anteaters posted a 19-9 block advantage, led by sophomore Chelsea Ellis’ match-high seven block assists.

Wyoming (3-2) was led by Rachel Smith, who had 17 kills.

The Anteaters return to action Tuesday at 7 p.m., when they play host to Loyola Marymount at Crawford Court.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL Vanguard def. Indiana Tech Vanguard def. Savanna Art & Design COSTA MESA — Kim Wynn complied 28 total kills to lead the Lions to two victories in the Crowne Plaza Labor Day Volleyball Festival Saturday at Vanguard. Wynn led the Lions with seven kills in a 31-29, 32-30, 30-25 win over Indiana Tech. She had 21 kills and Catlyn Appelgate added 12 in the triumph over Savanna Art & Design.   MEN’S SOCCER Vanguard 2, Cal State San Bernardino 0 SAN BERNARDINO — Senior Sem Lopez and junior Jason Swift scored a goal each to lead the Lions to a victory in their season opener on the road Saturday. Lopez scored in the 26th minute on an assist from sophomore Chris Leiva. Then, in the 46th minute, Swift found the back of the net. Junior Tom Culver and sophomore Ryan Marquez were credited with the assist. Vanguard freshman goalie Trevor Herrera recorded three saves. The Lions, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA preseason poll, will play at Champan Monday at 7 p.m.   WOMEN’S SOCCER Vanguard 1, Cal State San Bernardino 1 SAN BERNARDINO — The Lions avoided a shutout with a goal in the second half in their nonleague tie on the road Saturday. Trailing 1-0, senior Mallory Olloque scored in the 89th minute. Freshman Kaitlin McGhee and freshman Danielle Dintino assisted on the play. The Lions outshot San Bernardino, 21-9. Junior Jill Foss recorded two saves for Vanguard (1-1-1), which plays at Chapman Monday at 5 p.m.   MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Fullerton Invitational FULLERTON — Senior Humerto Rojas, an Estancia High product, helped lead Vanguard University to sixth place. Rojas, who redshirted last year, finished 19th in 27 minutes, .9 seconds. Teammate Jason Valenzuela followed in 24th in 27:11.10 at the Carbon Canyon Course in Fullerton. Freshman Roman Pascual (56th in 28:19.6), senior Jason Thomas (65th in 28:31.6) and sophomore Mike Hartanov (71st in 28:39.6) also competed.   WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY Fullerton Invitational FULLERTON — Rebecca Sopp finished 29th in 19 minutes, 17.7 seconds to help Vanguard University to a ninth-place finish. Gina Attard (20:22) and Kelsie Davis (20:30.5), finished 61st and 64th, respectively.
