It’s the third game of the year for Edison, and the third time that the Chargers will start a different quarterback when they visit Los Angeles Jordan for their earliest game time ever.

Last week, junior Garrett Heckel stepped into the starting role after No. 1 QB Nick Crissman had his appendix removed on Sept. 4. Heckel, in his first varsity start, overcame a pair of first-half interceptions to help engineer a second-half comeback that saw No. 5 Edison rally from a 17-7 deficit to score a 26-17 victory over No. 10 San Clemente in a meeting of two top-10 Pac-5 Division teams at Orange Coast College.

Edison outscored the Tritons, 16-0, in the fourth quarter, getting a pair of touchdown runs from Areseo Lakey and a safety by Shawn Higgenbotham, to nab the win.

But Heckel won’t start Friday at L.A. Jordan: He suffered a severe high-knee sprain during Monday’s practice, Chargers Coach Dave White said. Taking over the reigns will be another junior, John DeLuca, who has quarterbacked the Edison junior varsity team to two victories this year.

“He started both of those games and he’s done a nice job,” White said of DeLuca. “This will be his first taste of varsity football.”

The L.A. Jordan Bulldogs opened their season with a 14-6 victory over Locke but fell last week to Dorsey, 40-14.

Last year’s score: Chargers 57, Bulldogs 3

Westminster (1-0) vs. Marina (0-1)

(at Westminster High, 7 p.m.)

Two neighborhood teams carry on their long-standing rivalry when Marina plays host to Westminster at Boswell Field, which is the home field for both teams and located on the Westminster campus.

Marina looked sharp early in its season opener at Capistrano Valley last Friday, jumping out to a 13-0 lead. The host Cougars, however, rallied to take a 15-13 lead into the fourth quarter and went on to an eventual, 36-20 victory.

Marina starting quarterback Tim Atencio was in on all three of the touchdowns scored by the Vikings. First, he and Reggie Mitchell teamed on a two-yard pass play for the game’s first touchdown, then he scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter to move the score to 13-0. He pulled Marina to within 22-20 in the fourth quarter when he hauled in a 78-yard scoring pass from back-up quarterback Zach Couey.

“We got off to an excellent start, our offense was clicking and we didn’t have any turnovers,” said Dan Petrone who was in his first game as head coach of the Vikings. “We had about six starters down in the second half but we still played hard.”

Westminster opened its season last week with a 45-14 trouncing of visiting Garden Grove. Steven Marquez rushed for three touchdowns and Alex Gomez scored on two runs to lead a potent Lions rushing attack.

Last year’s score: Lions 27, Vikings 7

Ocean View (1-0) vs. University (1-0)

(at Irvine High, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View had its passing game in high-gear last Friday as the Seahawks opened their season with a 22-15 home win over Calvary Chapel (Santa Ana). Quarterback Dana Maley threw touchdown passes to Johnson Anwell and Phil Rodriguez and ran for a third score.

Maley finished with 221 yards through the air.

“It’s a great feeling any time you start off the season with a win,” Ocean View Coach Dean Yoshiyama said. “More importantly, we had some kids, young kids, make some big plays. Richard Lam had nearly 100 yards receiving, Johnson Anwell had some great catches and Phil Rodriguez caught a huge touchdown pass. It’s very, very pleasing for a coach to see good things happen to good, positive kids. I’m so glad that they got to experience a big night.”

University began its season Friday with its first-ever win over cross-town rival Northwood, 30-6. Quarterback Parker Thompson threw a pair of touchdown passes.

“They’re dang good,” Yoshiyama said of the Trojans.

Last year’s score: Trojans 13, Seahawks 6

Bye week: Huntington Beach.

The Oilers (1-1) last week earned their first win of the season by rolling past host Los Amigos, 35-20, at Garden Grove High. Johnny Olivé scored the game’s first two touchdowns as Huntington opened up a 14-0 lead. The Oilers then pulled away from a 14-7 halftime lead by getting a 15-yard TD run from Olive, 73-yard TD pass play between quarterback Bobby Duarte and Keith Roberts, and a 28-yard scoring run from Nick Gordon — all in the third quarter, to open up a 35-7 lead.

Next game: home opener Sept. 22 vs. Long Beach Jordan, 6 p.m.
