A Huntington Beach cyclist was struck and killed by an 18-wheel truck carrying construction debris Saturday while riding in Irvine with a large group of cyclists, police report.

Sandy Nelson Julienne, 47, was riding north in the bike lane on Culver Drive near University Drive at about 10 a.m., police said.

The wheels of the rear trailer clipped him as they passed him, and Julienne died at the scene, according to police.

The accident is still under investigation, Irvine police Lt. Rick Handfield said.

“We do have a couple of witnesses to the event itself, but the investigator has not formed an opinion yet,” he added.

A memorial service for Julienne will be at 10 a.m. today at United Methodist Church, 12741 Main St., Garden Grove.
