Sunset League Preview Meet

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High won at Central Park, going 5-0 in the head-to-head scoring format Wednesday.

Rex Nelson led the way for Newport Harbor, ranked fourth in the CIF Southern Section Division II, as it beat Edison, 21-38, Esperanza, 21-40, Fountain Valley, 22-39, Los Alamitos, 15-50 and Marina, 16-47.

Nelson finished in third place at 15 minutes, 41 seconds, followed by Jake Dawson (fifth, 15:43), Mike Puncel (sixth, 15:50), Alex Crawford (ninth, 16:06) and Scottie Figueroa (12th, 16:17).

Fountain Valley’s Eric Dyson ran the fastest time at 15:31.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High finished in third place, going 3-2 in the head-to-head scoring format at Central Park Wednesday.

Newport Harbor, No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Division II rankings, beat Marina, 24-31, Edison, 23-36 and Los Alamitos, 15-45.

Erica Pearson had the Sailors’ top finish, 10th at 18 minutes, 44 seconds. Sophia Ditty was 11th (18:45), followed by Tori Sarris (17th, 19:03), Desiree Alexander (18th, 19:05) and Ava Nelson (25th, 19:39).

Peninsula 5

CORONA DEL MAR — Melissa Matsuoka and Hailey Hogan swept in singles in the Sea Kings’ nonleague home match Wednesday.

Lindsay Zotovich and Danielle Kaiden, playing at No. 2 doubles, also won three sets for Corona del Mar (6-1), ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I.

Peninsula dropped to 5-2.

The Sea Kings open Pacific Coast League play at Beckman today at 3:15 p.m.

Corona del Mar 13, Peninsula 5 Singles – Matsuoka (CdM) def. Tam, 6-2, def. Gerverio, 6-1, def. Glimp, 6-0; Hogan (CdM) won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0; Feeley (CdM) lost, 0-6, won, 6-1, lost, 0-6.

Doubles – Ishii-Polizois (CdM) lost to Coleman-Steinhauer, 4-6, def. Bunnag-Chang, 6-1, def. Tatsuno-Bailey, 6-4; Zotovich-Kaiden (CdM) won, 6-1, 6-0, 6-0; (sub) Beyer-Stimac (CdM) lost, 4-6, Nazemi-Nguyen (CdM) lost, 1-6, won, 7-5.

Estancia 258

SAN CLEMENTE — Kim Haycraft led the Eagles with a 12-over-par 48, but they dropped their first match of the year during Orange Coast League action at San Clemente Golf Course Wednesday.

Ashley Peters finished with a 49, second-best for Estancia (6-1, 3-1 in league), followed by Jackie Crosson (51), Nushin Tasbihchi (53) and Jill Beck (57).

The Eagles play Orange Tuesday at River View Golf Club at 2:30 p.m.

Fairmont Prep 258,

Sage Hill 282

IRVINE — Amy Babbush led Sage Hill (1-4, 1-2 Academy League) Wednesday at Rancho San Joaquin Country Club with a score of 53, but the Lightning still succumbed in a nonleague loss to Fairmont Prep.

Kimberly and Kelsey Venditozzi both scored 56 on the par-36 course. Sara Anderson (58), Christie Li (59), and Sara White (59) also scored.

Fairmont Prep freshman Tavleen Kodnar led all scorers with 45.

University 216,

Corona del Mar 235

IRVINE — Sea Kings’ Coach Mike Starkweather said his team had its best team score on a par-36 course, but CdM stil lost the Pacific Coast League match at Rancho San Joaquin Country Club Wednesday.

“That’s pretty positive for a young group that we have,” Starkweather said of his team that has two sophomores and two freshmen.

Sophomore Tess Crane shot the lowest for the Sea Kings (2-5, 2-2 in league) with a 45. Teammates Amanda Johnson and Monica Phan both shot 47. Kelly Moorhead and Katherine Hanson both carded 48 for Corona del Mar.

Freshman Savannah Onal finished with 49, though her score was not counted for competition.

University’s Ani Gulugian and Jenni Nobe shared medalist honors, as both shot two-over.

CdM plays in the San Clemente Triton tournament Friday.

Laguna Beach 17, Estancia 6

LAGUNA BEACH — Jeff Crosson scored two goals, but the Eagles dropped their Orange Coast League opener Wednesday.

Tyler Wayman and Josh Young each added a goal for Estancia (3-5, 0-1), which plays host to Sage Hill Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Max Bergeson, Chris Cottrell and Lucas Reynolds each scored twice for CdM (7-2), ranked No. 6 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll.

The Sea Kings play at Esperanza on Tuesday.
