Laguna wins fourth league match

Valorie Quigley said she was smiling from “ear-to-ear” late Wednesday.

That’s because the Laguna Beach girls’ golf coach had just watched her Breakers pick up their biggest victory of the season by defeating Estancia, 248-259, in a key Orange Coast League match at San Clemente Municipal Golf Course (par 37).

Estancia had defeated Laguna twice last year en route to winning league.

On Wednesday, the Breakers’ Karina Shaw shot a 44 to earn medalist honors.

Laguna is now 4-0 in league and 5-1 overall.

The Breakers have won five-straight matches since a season-opening loss in earlier this month to Aliso Niguel.

“I’m so excited and so, so proud of these girls,” Quigley said. “They lost twice to this team last year but today, they played so well. I’m really happy for them.”

In a league match Tuesday, Laguna defeated host Ocean View, 271-325, at Meadowlark Golf Course (par 36) in Huntington Beach.

Shaw again medaled, this time, by shooting a 52.

Laguna began its recently stretch of league matches with a 251-291 win over Orange on the San Clemente course. Shaw shot a 42 to medal.

Laguna will play host Westminster Monday and Costa Mesa Wednesday, in a pair of league matches at San Clemente.

The boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams, who haven’t competed since running at the Woodbridge Invitational on Sept. 15, will return to course action Saturday at the Yucaipa Invitational.

“A totally new course to me and everyone else,” boys’ Coach Dave Brobeck said. “In coming up with the 2007 schedule, I wanted to give the group a bye week after Woodbridge, to recover and then to ramp our mileage back up. We are completely training through Yucaipa.

“In fact, I likely will not run a full varsity squad at the race. There are some guys on the team who will be better served in doing a 10-13-mile training run than another race at this point.”

Both Laguna teams will begin Orange Coast League competition on Wednesday with a home run against Calvary Chapel.

Laguna’s boys are defending league champions.

“Our league affords us the luxury of not always being at full strength and still advancing into CIF,” Brobeck said. “I have taken this approach now for several years. What concerns me most is not league. If win, well that’s great. It’s not the league that I am trying to win anymore. Many teams lose CIF and state championships due to killing themselves to win their league. I only need to be second in this league to advance to CIF.

“I have a very young varsity team and now more than ever I need to manage them intelligently. All eyes are already on CIF “” everything else, is just a prelude.”
