UC Irvine graduate Whitney Loufek has been named to the Intercollegiate Sailing Assn. 2007 All-Academic second team.

Loufek, a Costa Mesa resident, graduated last spring with a degree in social ecology/political science with a grade-point average of 3.61.

She was an ICSA All-American in 2006 for her competitive sailing achievements, and received honorable mention for the same honor in 2007.

In 2006, she was a member of the inaugural ICSA All-Academic team in 2006.

The ICSA All-Academic selections honor 10 first-team recipients and 10 second-team picks and winners must maintain at least a 3.5 GPA, be a key starter or reserve on their team, and be at least a junior.

The Vanguard University softball team will offer a series of short clinics for girls ages 5-12 beginning Oct. 1 on the Lions’ softball field.

One-hour clinics will be held Oct. 1, Oct. 8 and Oct. 15 from 4-5 p.m.

Cost is $35 for all three sessions. Participants will receive individual instruction from Vanguard players and coaches, and participate in group activities. No equipment is required, but a glove and bat is recommended.

The clinics will allow participants to learn basic softball skills.

Clinicians will instruct on the fundamentals of softball, but also stress that youth softball should be a fun and enjoyable.

Exceptions may be made on the age and skill level of the player if the opportunity is available.
