Orange Coast 3, Riverside 2

RIVERSIDE — The Pirates found their scoring touch on Friday and held off host Riverside in a physical Orange Empire Conference matchup.

OCC (5-3-2, 1-1-0) opened the scoring in the 19th minute with a goal by Jordan Joseph, off an assist from a Brady Condon corner kick.

Off a penalty kick, RCC’s Arnulfo Sanchez evened the score just two minutes later as both teams ended the first half tied, 1-1.

Just three minutes into the second half, Condon pushed the Pirates back out in front off a nice pass from Curtis Tanaguchi.

Four minutes later, OCC picked up a little breathing room when John Shinjo fed a nice pass to Jarred Balbas, who buried his shot into the back of the net for a 3-1 Pirates’ advantage.

The Tigers (5-3-1, 0-1-1) again found the back of the net on a penalty kick from Sanchez in the 54th minute to make it 3-2, but they could not find the equalizer.

OCC will return to action on Tuesday at home against Irvine Valley, beginning at 3 p.m.

Orange Coast 1, Santa Ana 1

COSTA MESA — Despite several excellent scoring opportunities, the Pirates had to settle for a tie with visiting Santa Ana on Friday in Orange Empire Conference action.

The Pirates (1-6-2, 1-3-2 in conference) found the back of the net in the 79th minute. Trailing 1-0, OCC forward Shannon Arnold flicked a nice header onto the feet of teammate Beth Krikorian, who chipped in a shot past Dons’ goalkeeper Ely Ureno (three saves) to even the score.

Santa Ana (2-5-2, 1-1-2) snapped the scoreless tie in the 59th minute off a free kick as Kathy Lee King sent a nice ball to Nancy Garcia, who slid a shot past Pirates’ netminder Katie Johnson (three saves).

Despite the even score, the game was played for the most part on the Dons’ side of the field as the Pirates kept the pressure on.

Early in the first half, Krikorian had a nice scoring opportunity, but her shot banged off the top of the goal to keep the game scoreless.

OCC will return to action on Friday at home against Cypress, beginning at 3 p.m.
