THE LAST WORD:

It’s always hard to understand any time when a young person dies.

The young have so much promise, so much potential.

So it’s especially disheartening to hear the news this week of Allan Oakley Hunter III, who died after apparently taking his own life while away at college.

The former Corona del Mar High student studied at New York University and was widely known for his artistic talents. Why he chose to end his life remains a mystery.

Hunter, also known as “Trey,” has left nothing but sadness behind.

Because Trey’s death just can’t be understood, we should focus on his life, who he was and whom he touched.

And we urge those in the depths of depression or despair to understand that life offers many obstacles but also just as many opportunities.

Hunter’s father, Allan Oakley Hunter Jr., said it best at his memorial Friday when speaking of his son’s friends. But his statement applies to all.

“Should they ever hear those lies of self doubt, let them reach out for someone.”
