Stanford Invitational

STANFORD — UC Irvine junior Laura Olvera placed third among 241 runners to help the Anteaters finish third as a women’s team at the 34th annual Stanford Invitational Saturday at the Stanford Golf Course.

Olvera finished the 6,000-meter course in 20 minutes, 42 seconds, nearly a minute off the pace of winner Arianna Lambie from Stanford (19:48).

Junior Candice Proctor was sixth in 20:54, while junior Samantha Costantini (28th in 21:49), senior Sara Mickelson (34th in 21:58) and senior Amber Gordon (72nd in 22:37) also scored for UCI.

No. 1-ranked Stanford won the 28-school competition with 27 points. NCAA Division II power Adams State was second with 78 and UCI scored 133.

Senior Sky Johnston paced the UCI men’s team, finishing 45th in the 312-runner field on the 8,000-meter course. His time was 25:05 to help the Anteaters finish 18th as a team.

Sophomores Colin Hacker (48th in 25:10) and Rusty Whisman (148th in 26:12) also contributed for the Anteaters.

The host Cardinal also won the men’s meet with 37 points.

UC Irvine 0, San Diego State 0

SAN DIEGO — UC Irvine junior goalie Greg Larson, who began his career at San Diego State, had four saves to earn the shutout against his former mates in a nonconference match Saturday on the Aztecs’ field.

Larson, making his first start of the season, matched SDSU keeper Brad Byrns, who had four saves.

The No. 25-ranked Anteaters (5-1-2), were outshot, 14-8, by the Aztecs (4-2-2).

UCI returns to action Wednesday when it opens Big West Conference play at defending national champion UC Santa Barbara at 8 p.m. The match will be televised nationally on Fox Soccer Channel.

Championships

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine senior Inna Agababian lost, 6-1, 6-4 to Melissa Koning of Auburn in the second round, after beating Karolina Soor of Marshall, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in the first round of singles play at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Championships Saturday at the Riviera Tennis Club.

UCI senior Becky Bernhard lost, 6-1, 6-4, to Noelle Hickey of Georgia Tech in first-round singles, while junior Clare Fermin lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Jessi Robinson of Duke in the opening round.

Bernhard and Fermin lost, 8-6, to Natalie Bubien and Nichole Briceno of SMU in a first-round doubles match.

Fresno Pacific def. Vanguard

COSTA MESA — Kelsey Wirt had 12 kills to lead the Lions, who lost, 30-23, 30-20, 30-28, to the NAIA’s No. 1-ranked team in a Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday.

Heather DeJongh finished with 10 kills and Meghan Walsh added 32 assists for 16th-ranked Vanguard (6-7, 4-4 in conference).

Fresno Pacific remained unbeaten at 17-0, 8-0.

FRESNO — The No. 10-ranked Lions tied with Sunbirds in a Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Vanguard is now 6-1-3, 1-0-2 in conference.
