Costa Mesa student to receive Hearn scholarship

Officials at the YMCA Orange County Community Services Branch announced Wednesday that Lisset Mendoza of Costa Mesa will be the first recipient of the Chick Hearn Legacy Scholarship Award, named after the legendary broadcaster and “Voice of the Lakers.”

The $5,000 scholarship award will be presented by Hearn’s widow, Marge, at the 32nd Annual Reach Out Awards Gala at the Costa Mesa Hilton Oct. 12.

Mendoza was a participant in the YMCA’s Youth Achievers program, earning the Superstar of the Summer Award for perfect attendance and participation, and receiving A’s in her summer classes. She also raised her grade point average 83% during the last five months of the school year.
