The Newport Beach Mavericks continued their succesful season with a 4-2 victory over previously unbeaten North Irvine in an AYSO Region 97 boys’ under-11 plus Sunday.

Newport stayed undefeated with its fourth straight win, gaining two scores from Carson Poivre, and one each from Cash Swank and Will Hinkelman. Jack Binford, Byron Gutierrez and Cory Stowell assisted the scores with solid passes. The defense, anchored by Dominik Folkner, was solid as Riley Gaddis, Caleb O’Neil, Peter Seidner and Sawyer Farmer made tremendous stops. Ryan Braun continued his solid play in goal, shutting out North Irvine in the first quarter before contributing on the field with Kevin Tellez, Christian Watson, and Chas Beek.

In other AYSO Region 97 games played over the weekend:

Ice Cubes 4, Ogres 3: Parker Young scored three goals to help the Ice Cubes win their first game of the season. Young scored on an assist from Jonathan Richards. Josh Ford scored. Sam Jones and Luke Mueller had an assist each. Goalie Patrick Halle kept the ball away from the net.

Cesar Guzman and Richards demonstrated their swiftness and excellent ball handling skills. Joe Janssen was able to keep control of the ball even when he was knocked down onto the grass.

Green Lightning 5, CM No. 4 0: Monika Peterson scored three goals, while Gigi Light and Rochelle Bowlin scored one each.

Page Keys had an assist. The offense of Janet Zelpa, Paige Bell-Wheelan, Andrea O’Campo and Kaelyn Kuenli were on the attack all game. Midfielders Megan Farley, Lauren Steinke, Hannah Beek and Tamera Myers sparkled the Green Lightning defense and kept the ball out of the net.

Great Green Sharks 5, Quicksilver 1: Led by Britney Myers with three goals and McKenna Johnson with two goals, the Great Green Sharks earned their first victory of the season. Cassidy Davis and Rachel Digiambattista helped offensively, while Macy Tellez and Emily Cook led the defensive effort.

Paradise Parrots 1, Aqua Strikers 1: Tyler Stupor and Rebekah Foster started off the game with great defensive plays for the Parrots. Bailey Carr had a huge defense kick down the field. Nicole Franco had numerous blocks. Felicity Giddings, Savannah Fausto and Noelle Hubbard commanded the goalie position with many saves. Marlee Phillips had great control of the ball with a nice long run down field. Lea Phillips and Brittnee Grosskopf had constant contact with the ball, making some great plays. Noelle Hubbard had the one goal of the game.

The team showed great teamwork for the goal between Lea Phillips, Savannah Fausto and Hubbard.

San Clemente 2, Newport Strikers 0: In a game that kept both keepers busy, Newport matched their opponents play for play, allowing only two San Clemente corner kicks to rebound into the net. Emma Erickson and Grace Emmel both contributed some booming clears on defense. Kappy Fuller and Molly McCunniff cut-off the opponents’ angles and constantly challenged to round out the Newport defense. Kierstyn Yardley and Colette Vigil were first to the ball, winning tackles in the midfield. They were supported by Mackenzie Gaddis, Kate Pipkin, and Brooke Meer with excellent positioning.

Brooke Schweitzer and Claire McCarthy had several good dribbling runs, followed by shots on goal from Gabby Shelley and Abbey Pickett. Logan Grove was solid in the goal for Newport with double-digit saves.

Blue Crush 3, Pink Panthers 1: Blue Crush forward Kelly Sandberg scored two goals in the first half and forward Kate Hefner also had a first-half goal. The Pink Panthers scored their single goal in the second half of the game.

Hot Tamales: The Hot Tamales girls played well together but couldn’t connect with the net for a tough loss. Outstanding offensive plays were made by Kendall Cosenza, Megan Keys, Haley Martinez and Genesee Giedt. Demi Ronis and Maggie Osumi did a stellar job in goal. Amanda Cox, Rebecca Szulga and Callie Spooner fought hard to win the ball. Destry Comp, Caylee Talbot and Megan Deegan hustled as midfielders and defenders.

Barracudas 3, Silver Bullets 2: Zach Durham scored in the first quarter, while Ethan Zimmerman lined the ball up and kicked one in on the diagonal in the second quarter. Race Chambers also scored in the second quarter. Jack McClintock got a pass from Durham and nearly added another one, kicking just wide of the goal. Briggs D’eliscu did some strong midfield work.

Sam Wertheimer scored two for the Silver Bullets. Hunter Warmington, Sean Freeman and R.J. Reid provided downfield kicks. Riley Blake, Marley Aragon and Dylan Wolfe contributed to the Barracudas defensive effort.

Green Devils 3, Fire 0: Connor Lindenstadt and Ryan Balkey both scored goals. Taso Marcopolous had five stops as goalie, Mitchell Luckey had four and Ryan Balkey had two. Jake Smith, Patrick Lynch and Alex Michaelsen all played tough defense. Zachary McKay, Caleb Detken, Tony Sanchez and Rex Kathcart all played hard and aided in the Green Devils victory.

Black Vipers 1, Golden Galaxy 0: Jack Christensen had a free kick and scored for the undefeated Vipers. Max Duncan, Jake Lucas and Alejandro Vargas played hard and made some great plays. The goalie, Andrew Pimental, had two great saves and no goals scored on him.

Golden Fireballs vs. Shooting Clovers: The Fireballs were up to the challenge with scores by Jordan Golden, Michelle Pokusa and Katie Browman. The coaches were proud to see great team soccer and position play including great defense “in the Boomerang” by Sydney Palmer, Lara Farinsky and Lauren Lyons. Betsy Calder, Miranda McCormick and Lauren Babin were fearless goalies, stopping many Clover boots.

Wildcats vs. Green Shamrocks: A great goal by Peri Rieke led to the Wildcats’ first win this season. In goal, Emma Kennedy stopped all goal attempts in the first half and Libby Larner kept the goal equally safe in the second half. Great passing and assists by powerhouse players Klaire Thoman, Abbigail Buggeln, Alex Stamy and McKenna Carroll aided the cause. Shannon White and Camber Calderwood shined on defense.

Green Machines vs. Red Team: Claire Covina scored a spectacular side-angled goal with the assist of a very persistent and speedy Eva Nadeau. Holly Nance was dependable with her ball control, and Paxton Bryant really stepped up her offensive game. Strong in the midfield were Emma Hammond and Paige Clayton, and running down the ball with lightening speed was Rachel Del Valle. Kate La Grandeur saved the day many times with her quick thinking and fearless defensive moves.

The Firecrackers vs. Trojans: Throughout the game the Firecrackers mounted a fabulous defense, keeping the Trojans from scoring despite 12 shots on goal in the first half alone. Goalkeeper Billy White made several diving stops to keep the ball out of the net in the first half, as did Jacob Matt. On offense, Keagan Coyne, Niko Kerr and Scott Faludi worked together to put several shots on the Trojans’ goal.

Gators vs. Black Knights: A phenomenal game was played by the Gators, as Ian Hanson scored his first-ever goal. With great passing from Tommy Hanle and Hunter Hall, Cole McFetters and Vincent Rubino scored as well. Domenic Christiansen, Matthew Ingram, Carter Bays and Lucas Ovalle played amazingly well at all positions assigned. Joshua Gehlke literally came out of the tree to shine in the fourth quarter.

Gators vs. Green Machine: In an action-packed game, the Gators played well as a team. Hunter Hall made a smashing goal in the third quarter. Carter Bays, Domenic Christiansen, Matthew Ingram and Lucas Ovalle played excellent ball, with Tommy Hanle clearing nearly every ball out of the backfield. Joshua Gehlke, Cole McFetters and Vincent Rubino made some fantastic passes and Ian Hanson showed great potential at goalie.

Island Girls vs. Sour Pickles: The Island girls were short a few players but played their hearts out. Held together with strong defense by Skylar Jacobsen, Claire Bacon and Lauren Titelman, the offense soared with goals by Alina Aguirre, Carolyn Altshuler and Caroline Pipkin.

Firecrackers vs. Flaming Sharks: In a very physical, well-matched game, Courtney Ima, Lily Newman and Lily Shea all scored goals. Keilani Lee was strong on defense and passing. Ashleigh McPhie made some powerful kicks and a great breakaway goal while Paige Bryant showed some talented footwork with her dribbling.

Shooting Stars vs. Kindergarten Kickers: The Shooting Stars fielded a full team with great plays on offense from Madison Mamelli and Peyton Russell. Jeannie Williams scored a goal for the team and made some key defensive plays while Alex Terry, Megan Houlihan, Katie Ridley and Kate Lynch showed strong all-around playing and effort.

Pink Diamonds vs. The Green Crickets: The Pink Diamonds continued their solid defensive effort this year with strong play from Amanda Hsieh, Natalia Bryant and Posey Di Paolo. Midfielders Lauren Braun and McKenna Kummerfeldt controlled the center of the field as they made solid advances to Trinity Rodman and birthday girl Jayd Sprague for scores.

Blue Bombs vs. Green Knights: Henry Elliot and Nicholas Zomaya worked hard together for the Blue Bombs, scoring the first goal. Braedon Post, Ryan Steinke and Brennen Ricker all had great kicks and assists. Andrew Benard and Alexander Burkemper provided great defense while protecting the goal.

Red Devils vs. The Snakes: Blake Barnett opened the scoring for the Red Devils. A great assist from Dylan Hillson led to Jack Starnes’ goal, and Ty Burgess scored perhaps the goal of the season by running the whole length of the field and whacking the ball into the back of the net. Hunter Barnett and Nolan Schupak made some great defensive plays and turned away scoring attempts.

Blue Rockets vs. Blue Lightning: Cole McCunniff made a great centering pass to set up the strong leg of Tommy Kennedy for the Blue Rockets’ first goal. McCunniff was at it again with a long outlet pass to Jackson Bryant, who worked the ball into the goal through a crowd. Luke Bashore was very active at the offensive end and his hard work was rewarded with a goal off another assist from McCunniff. After scoring the team’s only goal in their earlier make-up game, Mathew Gurka hustled back to make a goal-saving play on defense. The defense came up huge for the Blue Rockets, as Ryan McCarthy got the ball out of bounds to thwart several potential Blue Lightning breakaways and speedy Kori Griscom was active all over the field, including a steal that set up a goal.

Plaid Princesses vs. Purple Butterflies: The Plaid Princesses played royally, as mini-strikers Taylor Smith and Christiana Marcopulos provided solid offense for the team with goals throughout the game. Annie Somers, Keely O’Connor and Vanessa Koop provided excellent defense as well as multiple assists on goals.

Pink Dolphins vs. Jellybean Girls: This exciting, high-scoring game was highlighted by great drives and scores by Tyesha Aguilar, Fiona Slevin and Leah Beehler. Rachel Gore and Mandy Evans were great defenders in the huddle. Jaden Golden and Cora Harmon showed confidence.

Yellow Lizards vs. Justice League: It was a scoring frenzy between the Yellow Lizards and Justice League. Scoring for the Yellow Lizards was led by Benjamin Roberts and Trevor Muir, with Zach Wilkens assisting. Anders Olson and Trent Liolios made great defense with critical stops.

Orange Crush vs. Sea Creatures: The Sea Creatures had a great game from start to finish against the Orange Crush. In the opening seconds of the game, Finn McClintock seized his opportunity and dribbled through the Orange Crush defense to shoot one right into the net, while Joe Joe Whelan dominated the Sea Creatures offense in the second half with three goals. Aidan Gassel and Eddie Peterson showed off some fancy footwork, while Owen Lucas led the defense, stopping an Orange Crush shot on goal right at the goal line.

For the Orange Crush, great defense from Ethan Westerhout and Logan DeMoss allowed Brandon Kincaid, Tyler Li and Christopher Reimers.

Dragons vs. Sun Dragons: It was a fun-filled and energy-draining afternoon game between the Dragons and the Sun Dragons. With impressive offensive power shown by the Sun Dragons, the Dragons had to use all the defensive skills they could muster. Several key defensive stops were made by Nate Girvin, Jackson Banta, Ryan Harner and Eli Leithem. Leithem also made a great shot and scored a goal.
