League play on horizon

Three local prep football teams get in one last week of nonleague competition before they set their sights on upcoming league play.

Ocean View begins the week’s schedule for the locals with a game tonight against Estancia. Both Huntington Beach and Marina play Friday. Edison has a bye week.

Ocean View pieced together its most impressive defensive performance of the season last Friday during a 29-6 win over visiting Bolsa Grande.

The Seahawks limited the Matadors to just eight first downs.

“What stands out to me most in that game is the play of our defense,” Ocean View Coach Dean Yoshiyama said. “It’s the best effort we’ve given all year. The kids came to play with a lot of energy, really flew to the ball and made some big-time hits. We hadn’t been playing that well defensively this year up until that game. I was really pleased to see such a great effort.”

Yoshiyama also praised the play of senior linebacker Matt Taylor. “He’s been very solid all year,” Yoshiyama said. “He’s done all the right things and has worked really hard since the off-season.”

Estancia is coming off a 28-13 win over winless La Quinta of Westminster.

“They have a really solid quarterback who can throw the ball and also is athletic enough to where he also can run well,” Yoshiyama said of the Eagles. “They have a few offensive weapons that we need to figure out a way to stop.”

While Ocean View easily disposed of Bolsa Grande last week, Estancia fell 13-6 to Bolsa Grande back on Sept. 6.

Last year’s score: Eagles 35, Seahawks 7

Gardena (0-4) vs. Huntington Beach (2-2)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington got back into the win column last week by shutting out turnover-plagued Westminster, 21-0, in Westminster.

“I was really pleased with our defense, which played with a lot of energy,” Oilers Coach Eric Lo said. “We came out and played well and won a game we felt we needed to win.”

A week after shutting out Westminster, Huntington now faces a Gardena squad that hasn’t scored in two straight games. In fact, the Panthers have been outscored 153-18 in losses to Jefferson, Fairfax, Culver City and Inglewood.

Gardena, led by quarterback by Keshaun Malone, was routed last Friday by Inglewood, 50-0.

“This is by no means a game we can take lightly,” Lo said. “They are athletic, big, have a talented quarterback and running back, and average about 270 on the offensive line. Our goal is to be 3-2 heading into league play next week.”

The teams didn’t meet last year.

Marina (2-2) vs. Paramount (1-3)

(at Paramount High, 7 p.m.)

Marina will attempt to regroup from a 52-14 loss to Colton last week against a Paramount team that earned its initial win of the season last Friday.

Marina received a “good old-fashioned butt-whippin’” on both sides of the ball, Vikings Coach Dan Petrone said, against Colton. The Yellowjackets bolted to an early lead and ran up a 40-7 halftime advantage.

Also costly in the loss was the loss of senior running back/defensive back Charles Orrison, who dislocated his elbow following a long run into Colton territory midway through the second quarter. Orrison could return to the lineup in two weeks, Petrone said.

Paramount opened the season with losses to Canyon of Anaheim, Bellflower and La Mirada — a period where the Pirates were outscored, 101-35 — but woke up offensively last Friday and pounded Manual Arts of Los Angeles, 46-16.

“They are a very respectable opponent who is getting some confidence now after winning their first game,” Petrone said. “They had tough losses to Canyon and La Mirada. We need to respect them, be ready to play and go out and execute.”

Last year’s score: Vikings 39, Pirates 28

Bye week: Edison.

The Chargers have two weeks to prepare for their Sunset League opener against Los Alamitos.

Edison (3-2) suffered its second-straight nonleague loss last Friday with a 42-14 setback to top-ranked Mater Dei.
