Authorities on Monday identified the woman killed in a weekend car crash on Adams Avenue in Costa Mesa.

Sara Noel Harris, 21, of Huntington Beach was driving a late-model black Audi east on Adams Sunday afternoon when she lost control and smashed into a light pole where Adams intersects with Mesa Verde Drive, authorities said.

Just after 2:30 p.m. rescue crews arrived at the intersection finding a mangled black Audi, the bumper flung several yards farther down the street, and other bits of the wreckage spread around the car that was wrapped around one of the stoplights.

According to witnesses, the Audi and another car had been speeding down Adams Avenue just moments before the Audi’s driver lost control and slammed into the pole on the passenger’s side.

Kelly Regan was heading east on Adams Avenue when the two cars zoomed past her, she said. Just before the Mesa Verde Drive stoplight one of the cars spun out and slammed into the base of the stoplight at the southeast corner of the intersection, Regan said.

“This car and another car were racing,” Regan said. “She just lost control and slid into the pole.”

Harris was taken to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian where she was pronounced dead on arrival, authorities said.

No one else was in the Audi and no other drivers were injured, police said.

Although several witnesses reported another vehicle racing with the Audi — possibly another Audi or a red sport utility vehicle — police have found no other drivers who may have been racing or speeding, police said.

Investigators also have not confirmed that the other car was racing the Audi or just speeding on its own, Manley said.
