Newport Beach’s Newberg among elite

LONG BEACH — Phillip Newberg of Newport Beach is one of six Orange County residents among an elite group of 16 individuals — Legacy Runners — that have run every Long Beach Marathon since 1982.

Today, Newberg will again run in the Long Beach Marathon, the 23rd official time he has competed in it. He’s also run in a few unofficial ones as well. From 1996 to 1998, there was no official race, but the Legacy Runners kept the streak alive by hosting their own small event.

They will be among an estimated 18,000 runners, walkers and cyclists in the Long Beach Marathon events.
