Halloween play a throwback to ‘30s radio programs

Newport Beach playwright, screenwriter and director Cecilia Fannon will take you back to the days of 1930s radio programs when her Halloween play, “Things That Go Bump in the Night,” premieres at the Bowers Museum Oct. 26 and 27.

Standing at microphones, seven actors will read three classic horror stories from Edgar Allan Poe, W.W. Jacobs and Arthur Conan Doyle, complete with sound effects created onstage by a Foley artist — named after legendary Hollywood sound effects technician Jack Foley.

Foley artists can create sounds or enhance existing sounds for greater impact.

This show is not intended for very young audiences due to the “scare factor,” but Fannon encourages adults to relive some of the stories from their past and has a message for the younger generation.
