Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian placed in the top 10% of hospitals nationwide in several areas of care in a new healthcare study released Monday.

The 10th annual HealthGrades Hospital Quality in America Study also ranked Hoag in the top 5% of hospitals for surgery and treatment of skeletal and muscular problems and stroke treatment. Hoag placed in the top 10% for coronary interventions, general surgery and critical care.

Hoag credits its staff’s dedication to excellence for its high-ranking scores, said Jack Cox, Hoag chief quality officer.

“It really is a team effort,” Cox said. “The fact that we’ve been able to attract and keep the best nursing staff, doctors and ancillary staff is what keeps us on top year in and year out.”

HealthGrades, a national health care rating company, analyzed patient outcomes at most of the nation’s 5,000 hospitals from 2004 to 2006. HealthGrades has given Hoag six awards for excellence.
