Newport Harbor High swept the honors this past weekend at the Sea Otter Regatta in Monterey.

Junior Chris Barnard with senior crew Caitlin Beavers sailed to second place in the A fleet with 48 points and sophomore Chris Segerblom with crew Kayla McComb dominated the B Fleet, placing first with 29 points for the Sailors.

These combined scores gave Newport a score of 77, beating its longtime rival Point Loma High which had 131.

Corona del Mar was led by skipper Andrew Mason and crew Heather May as well as Alex Smith and crew Alison Deverian, who sailed to a fourth-place finish in the Gold Division with 168 points.

Sage Hill School was fifth in the Gold Division.

More than 30 schools competed in the Sea Otter Regatta, which is one of the five Pacific Coast high school sailing regattas leading up to the National Championships to be held in Annapolis in May of 2008.

The Orange County Water Polo Club, which was recently formed, is seeking players ages 8 to 18 to fill out its teams rosters.

OCWPC conducts practices at its home pool at JSerra High in San Juan Capistrano.

The Club plans to consistently develop water polo players capable of competing at the highest youth, high school, and collegiate levels.

Under the guidance of its highly qualified and experienced coaching staff, OCWPC regularly participates in the most competitive water polo tournaments, including national contests such as USA Water Polo’s National Speedo Cup, Junior Olympics, and other major regional events, where it is represented by teams in all age groups.

Practices focus on teaching new players the fundamentals of water polo, helping experienced players hone advanced skills essential to compete at the highest levels of water polo, conditioning to develop game stamina and teaching game strategies and instilling the importance of teamwork.

Participants have regular opportunities to apply the skills learned during practices to actual games.

The club draws members from all over Orange County and surrounding communities. Interested players are invited to visit the pool to observe practices, participate in a trial practice and meet the coaches.

OCWPC periodically offers free water polo clinics to introduce prospective players to the sport of water polo

Newport Beach residents Charlie Howarth, Daniel Stevens, John Walters, James Walters and Ben Zepfel are members of OCWPC’s 14-and-under team.
