Boys under 16

Newport 3, Tustin 2: The boys from Newport faced off against the top team from Tustin and shocked it with an upset Saturday. Newport was down 1-0 at the half, but rallied for the win. Kenny Sanchez and Brian Baca scored to tie the game. Austin Knott scored the game-winner with two minutes left in the game. Simon Hedrick played well in goal and Devin Hovis, Irving Torres, Luis Torres, Zac Buie and Raul Gomez played great defense.

Girls under 12

Team Shock 5, Lady Bugs 1: With the Shock playing as a team, Hailey Smith showed ball control and Kristin Watanabe was very fast. Hannah Doolin worked hard and Chelsea Baker displayed her fancy footwork. Leah Van Dyke and Jenna Jarvis kept the team working together. Tess Alexander scored to make it 3-1. Sammy Whitney scored the Shock’s final goal to make it 5-1.

Boys under 12

Red Banditos 2, Ogres 2: Mikey Lugo scored the Red Banditos’ first goal with a powerful shot from 10 yards out, for a 1-1 tie. The Ogres took the lead on a penalty kick, but the Red Banditos once again tied it up on James Okvist’s chip shot goal over the goalkeeper with three minutes left in the game. Strong defense from Tyler Hague, Daniel Pham and Wyatt Devine sealed the tie.

Girls under-10 Plus

Newport Beach Breakers 4, Costa Mesa 0: The Breakers have outscored the competition 21-3 over their first five games. Grace Clemence scored the first goal on a cross from Jordan Blanchfield. Taylor McMorrow scored the Breakers’ second goal off her dribbling. Kekai Whitford also scored making it 3-0 at halftime. McMorrow scored her second goal off another assist from Clemence. With Emily Goltz in goal and Emma Griffith, Brandi White and Gigi Woodall on defense, the Breakers were dominant. Toni Holland was credited by her coach as a key to the win and Bailey Prado and Holly Clemence created many scoring chances. The Breakers are 17-1 on the season.

Girls under 10

Orange Crush 1, Red Rock Stars 0: Mackenzie Mowery, Scout Farmer and Rylie Siegfried dominated the first quarter for the Orange Crush with their offense. Hannah Alderson and Emily Fay played great defense and Skyler Gullick scored a goal on a penalty kick. Hayden Allen and Allison Hanscom played hard for the Crush. Clara Eddy played well in goal along with Gullick in the second half. The Orange Crush pulled out its first win of the season.

Wildcats 2, Shooting Stars 2: The Wildcats struck first off a 20-yard kick from Kailynn Thomas. The defense was led by McKennah Blue and Ciera D’Alessandro who played tough. Down a goal in the second half, the Wildcats tied it up with a goal from Charlie Toffer. Emily Vaughn, Hannah Sanders and Emily Root kept the attack going and Olivia Jaber and McKennzie Porteous helped out with great efforts.

Hot Tamales 3, Blue Crush 2: Kendall Cosenza scored two goals for the Hot Tamales, helping them to their first win of the season. Haley Martinez also scored a goal in the win. Megan Keys had an assist and two steals. Maggie Osumi and Amanda Cox helped with key passes for the offense. Caylee Talbot, Genesee Giedt, Rebecca Szulga and Megan Deegan played tough and Destry Comp and Demi Ronis displayed strong defense for the Hot Tamales.

Boys under-10 Plus

Newport Beach 4, Costa Mesa 2: Dillon Murphy scored twice in the second quarter for Newport. Cole Brockhoff claimed a goal off a nice individual effort and Alex Forman scored the final goal in the fourth quarter. Josh Lewis showed leadership and Jonathan Farris, Cody Wildman and Jeremiah Sheldon played strong defense for Newport. Chase Braun, Sam Lauder, Dylan Kaplan and Charlie Stassel put pressure on Costa Mesa. Reed Rutter played well as the goalkeeper for Newport.

Boys under 10

Warriors 3, Barracudas 2: Trent Burgess scored the game-winner with two seconds left for the Warriors on a strong outside shot that went in the upper corner of the goal. The Warriors’ Sam Srapyan scored a brilliant goal on a corner kick and followed it up with a nice shot from outside the penalty box. The defense led by Nick Carey and Wilson Lubek played great.

August Rice scored in the first quarter and Jack McClintock scored on a penalty kick in the third for the Barracudas. Briggs D’Eliscu and Ethan Zimmerman played well on offense and Zach Durham displayed impressive hustle. Dylan Wolf and Riley Blake were strong on defense and Sean Freeman played well in goal. Marley Aragon dominated the Barracuda backfield in the fourth quarter.

Boys under 8

Gators vs. Panthers: The Gators played well against the Panthers. Carter Bays, Hunter Hall, Vincent Rubino, Lucas Ovalle and Joshua Gehlke displayed great passing on the field. Tommy Hanle and Ian Hanson played great defense and Matthew Ingram held strong in the goal.

The Green Machine: Jesse Camano had a hat trick, while the Green Machine also received great goals from Alex Carpenter and Conor Houlihan, and a breakaway goal from Rory Sever. Richard Torres provided multiple assists and John Rankin played well at the fullback position. Aidan Steinke played a balanced midfield and Peter Emmel showed defensive strength. Cade Kassouf had a goal save and some nice breakaways.

Girls under 7

Island Girls vs. G.I. Janes: Nicole Nesbitt was on fire on offense and defense for the Island Girls. Claire Bacon had her best game ever and Skylar Jacobsen provided some great saves on goal. Grace Fay and Alina Aguirre showed impressive passing and scoring.

Boys under 6

Red Devils vs. Rattlesnakes: Jack Starnes and Ty Burgess both scored four goals each in a great team effort. Starnes also had a nice assist to Dylan Hillson, who scored his first goal of the season. Nolan Schupak had some great defensive plays and without any subs, Starnes, Burgess, Hillson and Shupak played hard and showed brilliant teamwork.

Blue Rockets vs. Green Black Widows: Luke Bashore scored two goals for the Blue Rockets, who showed a strong team effort on Saturday. Ryan McCarthy scored his first goal of the year on some aggressive play up front. Jackson Bryant and Cole McCunniff displayed some exciting footwork, perfect passing and constant hustle. Tommy Kennedy used his strong leg to score the Blue Rockets’ final goal.

Girls under 5

Blue Sparkling Unicorns vs. Blue Dolphins: After the Blue Dolphins scored a quick goal, Bridget Walton scored on a breakaway and added several more goals later in the game. Lauren Friedman’s solid defense helped the Unicorns, as did her goal coming off an assist from Walton. With the Unicorns only having two players, they displayed a winning attitude and never gave up.

Pink Wahines vs. Mermaids: The rain wasn’t enough to stop the Pink Wahines from playing a solid match against the Mermaids. Multiple goals were scored by Emily, Willa and Riley. Maggie and Rachel’s defense held off any threats from the Mermaids.

Boys under 5

Sea Creatures vs. Bulldogs: Although the field was wet and muddy, the Sea Creatures and the Bulldogs braved the elements. Joseph Whelan dribbled the ball down the entire length of the field and scored the only goal for the Sea Creatures. Aidan Gassel and Owen Lucas displayed their ball-handling skills and Finn McClintock had a great pass to Whelan. Eddie Peterson and the Sea Creatures defense were put to test and were excellent.

Orange Crush vs. Ninja Turtles: Christopher Reimers, Logan DeMoss, Tyler Li, Brandon Kincaid and Ethan Westerhout all scored in the Orange Crush and the Ninja Turtles’ outstanding game on Saturday. The Orange Crush showed improvement in their passing and assisting, resulting in a great offensive game.

Girls under 12

Team Shock 2, Aqua Strikers 4: In a make-up game, Team Shock saw good play from Kenya Avila and Allison Hanle. Goalkeeper Jessica Ochoa played hard in the box and Alice Barry showed a lot of positive energy, attacking the ball.

Boys under 6

AYSO Region 57

Stingers vs. Red Rangers: Christian Schwartz scored four goals for the Stingers, who played a tough Red Ranger team. Tyler Harvey scored twice and Alee Assadian contributed as well. Continuing the outburst of scoring, Ryan Shahretany and Blake Jackson each scored a goal. Jacob Krantz and Sam Hurwitz both provided strong offensive and defensive performances.

GYMNASTICS

OC Classic

Newport Coast resident Briana Sukert finished third in vault and fifth all-around at the OC Classic Junior Olympic Invitational, held Sept. 29 at the Team OC gym in Costa Mesa.

Sukert was competing in Level 4 at the tournament, which featured 361 gymnasts and 25 teams from the West Coast.

Team OC’s Level 6 team, consisting of Ally Pytel, Mina Nakatani, Ali Martino, Cami Macdonald and Krista Zemke, won first place.
