RESTAURANT ROUNDUP:

The Five Crowns restaurant in Corona del Mar is replicating a 16th-century dinner this month with one minor change: There will be forks available at the table.

In the Elizabethan era, English diners considered raw fruits and vegetables a health hazard and stewed or boiled them well. Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding were staples of a hearty meal.

Fish simmered on the stove in ale. The Five Crowns, which debuted a special fixed-price menu to coincide with the release of the movie “Elizabeth: The Golden Age,” is providing all of the above — and it’s also offering customers a full array of utensils, which wouldn’t have been the case 400 years ago.

“It’s a great opportunity for dinner and a movie,” said Susan Ballou, a spokeswoman for the Five Crowns. “See ‘Elizabeth: The Golden Age,’ and then go to the Five Crowns and have a 16th-century meal.”

The menu, available through Oct. 31, features a choice of entrees between roasted prime ribs of beef in port wine jus with Yorkshire pudding, wild salmon filet simmered in ale with parsley, rosemary and thyme and a side of sherried prunes.

There will also be a compound of — cooked — spinach and red cabbage with assorted fruits and vegetables, as well as a spinach and artichoke pie and rice pudding.

The Five Crowns is at 3801 E. Coast Hwy. in Corona del Mar.
