IRVINE — UCI senior Colin Mello scored with 19 seconds left for the game-winner in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Friday night at Anteater Pool.

No. 9-ranked UCI improved to 9-7, 2-1 in conference, while the No. 6-ranked 49ers fell to 13-7, 0-2.

Coming out of a timeout with 33 seconds left, Mello’s skip shot from the right side provided UCI with its second late-game victory in as many nights. A Brandon Johnson goal with one second left Thursday evening lifted the Anteaters past Loyola Marymount 10-9.

Long Beach State trailed, 5-2, at halftime but gradually closed the gap and tied it at 6-6 on a goal by Jeff Greenwood with 33 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

Mello and senior Tim Hutten, who had each missed the past five games with injuries, scored two goals apiece, as did senior Cole Bitter. Hutten and Bitter scored all of their goals in the first half.

Senior goalie Matt Garcia had 10 saves for UCI.

STOCKTON — Senior Frankee Kelly scored a career-high two goals in the Big West Conference clash Friday at Stagg Stadium.

Kelly, a midfieler, opened the scoring in the 73rd minute on an assist from senior Kim Horn.

UCI, which went 0-7 in conference last season, improved to 8-5-1, 2-1 in the Big West under first-year coach Scott Juniper.

Freshman goalie Danielle de Seriere had nine saves to post her sixth shutout of the season.

COSTA MESA — The Pirates played the final 59 minutes of Friday’s Orange Empire Conference match one player short, after Orange Coast defender Brianna Vanderwal was given a red card for intentionally knocking the ball away from the goal with her hand.

Katie Johnson had nine saves for OCC (3-9-2, 3-6-2 in conference), while teammate Heather Bystrom had six saves.

Santiago Canyon improved to 15-0, 11-0.

The Pirates will visit Golden West on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Orange Coast 2

ORANGE — The Pirates’ Jarred Balbas scored his team-leading seventh goal of the season in Friday’s Orange Empire Conference road contest.

Brian Siemonsma scored the second goal for OCC (6-6-4, 2-4-2 in conference) off a corner kick from John Shinjo to give the Pirates a 2-1 halftime lead.

Goalkeeper Dane Fernandez had five saves for the Pirates.

The Hawks improved to 10-3-2, 5-2-1.

OCC will play host to Riverside Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Titan Invitational

FULLERTON — The UC Irvine men’s team finished second Friday on the Cal State Fullerton campus.

Brian Brierly finished 14th in 26 minutes, 31 seconds over the 8,000-meter course to pace the Anteaters.

Tim Murphy (19th in 27:12), Solomon Tesfaye (25th in 27:28), Rory Mahony (29th in 27:46) and Kareem Barghouti (39th in 28:38) helped UCI post 74 points, bested only by UCLA (15).

The UCI women finished fifth with 138 points as Orange Coast College won the meet with 55 points.

Megan Fairley was 10th in 18:56 on the 5k course.

UCI was also represented by Shelby Pock (30th in 19:46), Jessica Vaughan (40th in 20:05), Nicole Alai (74th in 22:02) and Corrina Carter (90th in 24:45).

Former UCI women’s water polo coach Julie Swail, competing for the Corona del Mar-based Cal Coast Track Club, won the women’s race in 17:34.
