IRVINE — Junior Matt Murphy scored on a free kick from 30 yards out with two seconds left in regulation and the Anteaters held on through two overtime periods for the tie in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

The Mustangs (9-1-2, 4-0-2 in conference) took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute. Later, the Anteaters (6-3-4, 1-2-2) were awarded a free kick from 30 yards following the second yellow card given to Cal Poly’s Mario Fernandez.

The Anteaters and Mustangs each played with 10 players for the two overtime periods with UCI playing a man down for the final 15 minutes of the second half after junior Kyle Schmid was given a red card. Cal Poly out shot UCI, 3-0, in the overtime periods, but neither team was able to get another over the goal line.

Freshman keeper Pat Barton had four saves for the ’Eaters. Keeper Eric Branagan-Franco had four saves for Cal Poly.

The Anteaters return to action Wednesday as they play host to UC Riverside at 7 p.m.

Vanguard 1, Hope

FULLERTON — The Lions’ Tomislav Colic scored on a penalty kick in the 37th minute in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Vanguard improved to 9-5, 4-4 in conference.

RIVERSIDE — Freshman Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters with 19 kills in their 30-26, 30-13, 30-22 Big West Conference victory Saturday.

Junior Lauren Kellerman added 15 kills and setter Taryn Robertson contributed 47 assists for UCI (16-7, 6-2 in conference). Anteaters libero Devon Sutherland finished with a match-high 16 digs.

Riverside dropped to 5-14, 1-7.

EL CAJON — Kim Wynn led all players with 15 kills and 18 digs to lead the Lions to a 30-24, 30-21, 30-19 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Heather Dejongh added 11 kills and Shardai Sublett had nine for Vanguard (8-11, 6-8 in conference). Meghan Walsh had 30 assists and Alexandra Griffths had 16 digs.

San Diego Christian dropped to 6-19, 0-14.

FULLERTON — The Lions out shot Hope, 13-6, but allowed a goal in the 73rd minute of the Golden State Athletic Conference game.

Vanguard goalie Jillian Foss had one save. Ivana Mendez and Emelia Miller each had two shots on goal for the Lions (8-4-3, 3-3-2 in conference).

COSTA MESA — Vanguard University’s Jason Valenzuela finished fifth in 25 minutes, 29 seconds on the 8K course to help the Lions take third at Fairview Park Saturday.

Vanguard’s Humberto Rojas also had a top-10 finish, placing ninth in 25:45. Roman Pascual was 12th in 26:01 and Michael Hartanov was 32nd in 26:58. Darren Bruneck also competed for the Lions and finished 59th in 29:31.

Concordia won the men’s title by one point over Azusa Pacific, 77-78.

The Vanguard women finished seventh among eight teams. Gina Attard led the Lions, finishing 39th in 20:08 on the 5K course. Teammate Kelsie Davis was 40th in 20:09 and Katrina McGraw was 48th in 20:32. Erinn Walsh (61st in 21:12) and Sarann Medlen (74th in 22:25) also competed for Vanguard.

Azusa Pacific won the GSAC title with 57 points, ahead of second-place Biola, with 66.
