TUSTIN — Costa Mesa High junior Cody Serrano had 10 goals, 17 steals, three assists and four blocks in four games to earn all-tournament honors Saturday.

The Mustangs (12-10) finished with a 2-2 record in the tournament, suffering two losses in sudden-death overtime.

They had lost to Orange Coast League rival Sage Hill, 10-9, in the second sudden-death overtime period Wednesday.

“It’s frustrating,” Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said.

The Mustangs started the day in consolation action with an 8-7 loss in sudden death to Patrick Henry of San Diego. Costa Mesa’s top scorer, Skyler Twohig, was ejected midway in the third period because of three exclusions, making a victory more challenging for the Mustangs.

In overtime, Sam Edman’s shot went off the crossbar and settled just in front of the cage. A Patrick Henry player scooped it away and started a counterattack that ended with the game-winner, Taylor said.

“It was rough,” he said.

Serrano recorded six steals in that game and scored two goals, just like Edman and Twohig.

The Mustangs ended the tournament with a 7-6 victory over Aliso Niguel. Twohig and Sanchez scored two goals each.

Goalie Jackson O’Connor contributed with eight saves, three steals and one assist.

Serrano came up big, too, blocking a shot at the end of regulation when the Mustangs were a man down that prevented overtime.

Costa Mesa will return to Orange Coast League play Wednesday at 3 p.m., when the Mustangs play host to first-place Laguna Beach.
