Girls under 14

Great Green Sharks 4, Aqua Strikers 0: Solid defense, superb passing and overall teamwork helped the Great Green Sharks to their victory. The Sharks were led by goals from Emily Cook, Britney Myers, Tootsie Tuducan and Jordan Goldsberry in an all-around great offensive effort. Hayley Beacham had an outstanding game at goalie supported by Kathryn Snell, Jenna Lincoln and Hailey Mahaffey on defense.

Boys under 14

Lucky Charms 6, CdM 2: Adam Kinder and Mason Murphy scored two goals apiece followed by Abner Viveros and Kyle Regan with one goal apiece. Eric Rosales forced another missed penalty kick by CdM. Bobby Swift, Zane Torre, Connor Moore, Parker Joyce and Chase Crowell all played tough defense.

Girls under 12

Shock! 1, Quicksilver 0: As Team Shock! finds its stride, it used great teamwork from Hailey Smith, Chelsea Baker, Jenna Jarvis and Alice Barry working together to move the ball in the right direction. Tess Alexander and Sammy Whitney came to work together as well. Leah Van Dyke, along with Kenya Avila, Kristin Watanabe and Alison Hanle, brought the score to 1-0 at the end of the first half. Amber Bowker, Hannah Doolin and Tess Alexander held off the Quicksilver and brought the game to a close with Team Shock! winning. Best wishes to teammate Jessica Ochoa who came and cheered her team on even with a sprained elbow.

Girls under 10 (Plus)

Newport Breakers 4, CdM 0: The Breakers continued their unbeaten season with a shutout win over Corona del Mar. Although the Breakers dominated possession of the ball in the first half they found it difficult to cash in. Despite seven shots on goal, the game remained a scoreless tie. Taylor McMorrow finally found the back of the net in the second quarter, off an assist from Jordan Blanchfield, and the Breakers led 1-0 at halftime. In the third quarter the Breakers lit up the net with goals from Peyton Espley-Jones, McMorrow and Bailey Prado. Notching their second straight shutout, the Breaker defense was led by Brandi White, Emma Griffith, Emily Goltz, Gigi Woodall, Grace Clemence and Holly Clemence. Kekai Whitford was the player of the game in the center-mid position.

Girls under 10

Purple Penguins 3, Wildcats 0: The game between the Penguins and the Wildcats started out a defensive battle. In the second quarter, the Penguins were able to get on the board after a precisely placed penalty kick from Bailey Scalzo. The Wildcats got a penalty kick of their own just minutes later, but it sailed high off the top of the goal post to keep a 1-0 lead for the Penguins at the half. In the third quarter the Penguins broke it open with two driving goals by Julianna Eifler. The stellar offensive and defensive play from Jessica Woodruff, Cameron Dewan, Katie Kearns, Grace Blackman, Emma Kathcart, Holland Hickson, Alyx Golan, Brittany Wallace, Kate Granoff and Alexis Van De Langeryt kept the Wildcats scoreless throughout, for a decisive Penguins victory.

Pete’s Pickles 2, Red Rock Stars 1: Two goals from Seneca Fuller and outstanding defense from Emily Avila, Marley Mais, and Chandler Ellmore made the difference for Pete’s Pickles. Jo Jo Stassel did not allow a goal for the Pickles as they got great midfield play from Chloe Hyde and Caroline Batcheller. Forwards Olivia Zehnder and Nicky Long provided great teamwork and assisted both goals.

Orange Crush 3, Red Hot Tamales 0: The first quarter was dominated by Orange Crush’s offense and Rylie Siegfried scored the first goal right at the end of the quarter. Scout Farmer and Emily Fay made several goal attempts in the second quarter, and Allison Hanscom blocked a kick at the end of the second quarter, keeping the Tamales scoreless into the second half. In the third quarter, Mackenzie Mowery, with an assist from Clara Eddy, made Orange Crush’s second goal of the game. Smart defense by Skyler Gullick and Paige Alkire made it almost impossible for the Tamales to make any attempts on goal. Siegfried made several attempts on goal in the fourth quarter, and finally made one last goal to end the game.

Girls under 8

Green Lions vs. The Pink Hot Shots: Two of the goalies for the Green Lions made some incredible saves. One was Alyssa and the other Annabel. On the offensive end Allison was able to get the ball down the field a number of times.

Boys under 8

Dolphins: Sean Waterman had three shots on goal in the game before scoring the Dolphins’ only goal in the fourth quarter. As left halfback, Luke Mendoza moved the ball forward and as goalie in the third quarter made a great stop on goal. Ian Schwartz made several stops on goal during his quarter as goalie and played great defense. Cole Schneider had a tense quarter in goal when several shots were fired wide of the goal. Schneider also had some great defensive plays out of the goal. Nolen Putnam played well in goal in the first quarter and had two shots on goal in the fourth quarter. Putnam moved the ball forward beautifully during the game. Nathan Porter, Ethan Talley and Scotty Ryder played a great defensive game and Ryder had two shots on goal. Dillon Lippman played an awesome game, going to the ball, winning it from his opponents, and moving it forward.

Girls under 7

Island Girls vs. Blue Dolphins: The Island Girls were full of aloha spirit against the Blue Dolphins. Nicole Nesbitt started off the game with an aggressive goal. Alina Aguirre was incredible with her jaw-dropping scoring. Skylar Jacobsen was fierce, once again with stellar kicks as a defender and a few close goals. Claire Bacon must have had a good breakfast because she was unstoppable. Grace Fay and Caroline Pipkin were incredibly tough opponents throughout the entire game. Carolyn Altshuler and Claire Jeffs made some great passes along with some strong defensive plays. Last but not least, Lauren Titelman made some unbelievable stops as goalie.

Girls under 6

Shooting Stars vs. Tigers: The Shooting Stars challenged the Tigers in an exciting game that saw both teams making impressive offensive and defensive plays. For the Shooting Stars, Madison Mamelli, Alex Terry and Peyton Russell were standouts, demonstrating speed and offensive skill. Defensive plays were made by Jeannie Williams, while Megan Houlihan, Kate Lynch and Katie Ridley made solid contributions throughout the game.

Firecrackers vs. Purple Flowers: The Firecrackers had a dynamite game with Lily Shea, Lily Newman and Keilani Lee all scoring goals. Courtney Ima played tough with breakaways down the field. Ashleigh McPhie was consistently strong with her powerful kicks and defense. Katie Hess held her ground and had great defense positioning throughout the game, while Paige Bryant dazzled us with her dribbling and positive team spirit.

Golden Stars vs. Jelly Beans: The Golden Stars played hard against an underpowered Jelly Bean team. Eva Yacoel stood out with a fast race to the goal for the entire game. She had a great back up in players Helena Mulville and Lauren Richter. Grace Kiehnle was really coordinated with her kicks and Sadie Pitchess never missed a defensive block. Lauren Talley and Grace Close mixed speed with accuracy as they moved the ball up the field.

Girls under 5

Sparkling Blue Unicorns vs. Sweet Peas: Bridget Walton scored several fantastic goals for the Unicorns, and both Lia Azdere and Lauren Friedman also added goals. The Sweet Peas displayed some excellent ball-handling and crisp passing while scoring several goals. Lauren Friedman then made several excellent throw-ins and corner kicks to help her Unicorn teammates. As usual, Lia Azdere pressed hard on defense and helped her Unicorn teammates push the ball up the field. All the players joined in a huge parent tunnel afterward for a post-game celebration.

Boys under 5

Sea Creatures vs. Cheetahs: The Sea Creatures had a spectacular outing against the Cheetahs, with everyone on the team putting forth great effort and teamwork in both offense and defense. The Sea Creatures used some great throw ins and kickoffs by Eddie Peterson to control the ball and score. Joseph Whelan scored four, and made a great pass the Finn McClintock who shot it in the net to bring his total to three goals. Owen Lucas added two more. Aidan Gassel dribbled well, and made a good save right in front of the goal.

Girls under 12

Costa Mesa wins trio of games: Fresh off a McMillan Tournament championship, the Costa Mesa girls haven’t looked back. They won three games recently, 4-1 against San Clemente, 7-2 against Aliso Viejo and 1-0 against Tustin.

Jacqueline Hubbard had three goals for a hat trick against San Clemente, and Cristina Tuer added a goal.

In the romp against Aliso Viejo, Hubbard again scored three goals, while Alondra Novoa and Gracie Dimond each scored twice. Tuer also scored the only goal against Tustin, with exceptional goalie play from Dimond.

Emily Grady, Emily Gruber, Claudia Huerta, Stephanie Madrigal and Marlene Calderon have been playing great defense for Costa Mesa, while the halfback line of Sophia Shambrook, Amy Heil, Anna Vivanco, and Hubbard have been controlling the midfield.

Forwards Jackie Tanner, Jayme Krohnfeldt, Novoa, and Tuer provide constant pressure on opposing defenses. The girls have dominated their competition, not by the scores of the games but by determination, by the total team effort. They are starting to really enjoy the game of soccer, the way the game should be played.

Girls under 8

Bubble Gum Blasters vs. Red Dragons: Both teams played hard and strong until the very end. Bubble Gum Blasters player Ivy Greiner, scored an amazing goal in the third quarter, while goalies Allison O’Heany, Lilli Rask, Ally Rodriguez and Haley Wolf made some terrific stops against the Red Dragons. It wasn’t until the last second, right before the whistle was blown, that the Red Dragons scored to tie the game. With a score of 1-1, the entire game was tight.

Boys under 8

Scorpion Kings vs. Grey Sharks: The Scorpion Kings had an impressive game against the Grey Sharks with their goalies, Jake Marye and Kevin Johnson, keeping it a shutout. Their defensive line Joey Wakely and Nathan Guyot helped keep the ball out of range. Henry Campbell and Arman Kayhan-Mahd were impressive with several assists to Gabe Marye, who scored the game’s only goal. Henry Campbell helped with the Scorpion Kings victory.

Scorpion Kings vs. Tiger Sharks: The Tiger Sharks were strong in their offense and scored eight goals against the Scorpion Kings. The Scorpion Kings had some good defense and kept several balls out of their net. Gabe Marye scored the solo goal for the Scorpion Kings. Shane Piovesan, Kevin Johnson and Nathan Guyot played some solid defense, while teamates Joey Wakely, Henry Campbell and Dillon Gaboury were fast with their offensive plays. Arman Mahd and Jake Marye had some incredible assists and passes.

Boys under 6

Barcelona: Oscar Barranon scored twice and Abraham Alvaros scored once, which scored twice in the first half and also scored on a penalty kick.

Stingers vs. Chargers: The Stingers came out firing, as Jacob Krantz and Sam Hurwitz scored their first goals of the year. Blake Jackson also scored, along with Tyler Harvey. Christian Schwarz scored two goals and Alee Assadian and Ryan Shahrestany provided stellar defense for the Stingers. The Stingers are undefeated with three games left.

Jr. Midget Division

Newport-Mesa Seahawks 13, Carson Colts 0: The Seahawks kept their undefeated record alive by beating their rivals from Carson on Sept. 13. Led by Coach Tim Kuzmic, the Seahawks faced rainy weather as well as the lack of three starting defensive players, but came out with the victory as Justus Gildart and Chase Favreau each scored touchdowns.

The first quarter ended scoreless, as both teams fought to gain yardage. On both sides, the defense was strong, including a sack by the Seahawks’ Zach Salaam. The beginning of the second quarter was marked by turnovers on both sides, as two fumbles by the Seahawks were followed by a fumble by Carson. With five minutes to go in the second quarter, the Seahawks defense came through with an impressive goal-line stand, forcing an incomplete pass by the Colts on fourth-and-goal and shutting down the Colts’ long drive at the Seahawks’ one yard line. Despite an impressive 35-yard run from the Seahawks’ Gildart, the game remained scoreless at halftime.

In the second half of the game, the Seahawks came alive with a 25 yard run by Gildart, with Taylor Epp throwing the key block to enable the impressive run. Epp caught a long pass to the Colts’ one-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by Gildart with four minutes to play in the third quarter. Jake Ambrose kicked the extra point to put the Seahawks ahead 7-0. Following the touchdown, Brett Parker kicked off to the two-yard line. The Colts couldn’t maintain possession, and a Colts fumble was recovered by Grant Garrett with three minutes to play. Quarterback Chase Favreau found Jake Stowell at the one-yard line for a completed pass, followed by a quarterback sneak for the touchdown.

There were several key plays by the defense, including Stowell breaking up a pass on third down to force a punt by the Colts. Jake Hall sacked the Colts quarterback for a loss of 15 yards. Another sack by Gildart set up a third-and-38 situation for the Colts. Once again, the Seahawks defense held strong, and with eight minutes to play, forced a turnover when their next pass was intercepted by Grant Garrett.

The Colts tried one last time to score. With 4:20 to play, the Colts blocked a Seahawks punt, setting up a challenge for the Newport Mesa defense. The Seahawks’ Hayden Paul blocked a pass on 1st down, and the defensive line forced 2 consecutive incomplete passes by the Colts. On fourth down, the Seahawks defense held back the Colts once again, when Jack Kanen secured the Seahawks victory with a fourth-down tackle.

Clinic Division

Newport-Mesa Seahawks 32, Huntington Beach Oilers 0: It was another hard-fought victory for the Newport-Mesa Seahawks over the Huntington Beach Oilers. Led by consistent play by Adam Freeman and Cole Collins at quarterback, the offense scored five touchdowns. For all four quarters great blocking from offensive linemen Trevor Branca, Kobe Benter, Brody Richter, Jack Rodosky, Nicholas Guizan, Max Peterson, Nino Chavez, Cody Gores and Dominic Komadina led to two touchdown runs by Keaton Cablay.

Three more touchdowns were scored by our running back tandem known as “Thunder and Lightning.” Quick and elusive running by tailback Anthony Battista — “Lightning” — accounted for one touchdown and set up the other two for the hard-nosed running style of fullback Josh “Thunder” Debernarde. A great catch by receiver Joey Cox on a slant pattern capped a solid day for the offense.

For the third straight game the Seahawks recorded a shutout. The hard-hitting Seahawk defense led by linebackers Anthony Battista and Adam Freeman, safety Josh Debernarde and defensive ends Clint Henderson, Parker Chase and Richard Hagestad helped shut down the Oilers’ running game.]

Great play from defensive backs John Kinnear, Chance Siemonsma and Sutton Barbato contained the outside run game along with great pass protection.

Flag Football Division

Newport-Mesa Seahawks 32, Rowland Heights Raiders 0: The “Blue” Hawks spread the ball around in the air and on the ground. Quarterback Spencer Hook threw for a couple of scores to Bradford Binder and Shawn Neilson. Bobby Purcifull and Braiden Hook put the game out of reach by running the ball to the house.

Scoring drives were set up by big runs from Jack Elliott and Luke Fisher. If it weren’t for the stellar blocking of Brannon Syler, Christian Delgado and Logan Rockwell, the game might have been closer. The Seahawks’ “lights out” defense secured their third shutout of the year due to the flag-pulling mastery of Dylan Clemens and Joey Ruiz.
