Chargers seek 3 wins

Dave White calls Esperanza the “hottest team” in the Sunset League right now.

Well, for his Edison Chargers to have any shot of winning a third-straight league championship, they’ll need to defeat the red-hot Aztecs when the teams meet tonight in Placentia in the eighth week of the prep football season.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Valencia High.

Edison held Los Alamitos in check and dominated its Oct. 12 Sunset opener statistically, but the score didn’t reflect that as the Chargers came away with a 13-9 defeat in its homecoming game.

Another setback tonight against an Esperanza club that is 1-0 in league after dominating Newport Harbor 28-7 last week would lead to a long climb back into title contention for Edison.

The Chargers have upcoming games against rival Fountain Valley and Newport Harbor to close out the league season.

“To be honest, I think we need to win all three games to be league champs again,” White said. “We’ll be taking on a really good Esperanza team. It’ll take our best effort to win the game, but I know our players have it in them.”

Running backs Reid Williams and Jared Moore give plenty of punch to an Aztecs offense that has run up 88 points in two league contests.

Defensively, the Aztecs haven’t given up a score in league play.

Williams and Moore have combined for nearly 1,400 rushing yards.

“They are playing with a lot of confidence right now,” White said. “They run the ball extremely well and eat up so much of the clock. Defensively, they blitz almost every down.”

Edison broke out of a recent scoring slump by pinning 62 points on Marina on Friday and its defense didn’t give up a point in a 62-7 victory, a game in which White was able to substitute freely.

The Edison school record for points in a game is 66.

The Chargers will be without starting free safety and punt returner Mike Rivera tonight. The sophomore injured his knee last week against Marina.

Last year’s score: Aztecs 38, Chargers 0

In other games tonight:

Marina (3-4, 0-2) vs. Fountain Valley (4-3, 0-2)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Two teams in search of their first Sunset League win square off at Cap Sheue Field.

Marina hasn’t beaten the Barons since the 2001 season.

Both Marina and Fountain Valley haven’t mustered much scoring on offense in their previous league games, the Vikings scoring just one touchdown last week against Edison after being shutout by Esperanza.

Fountain Valley entered league play 4-1 but have been outscored in two Sunset League games, 40-10. Last week, the Barons played Los Alamitos tough but ended up losing, 13-3.

Friday’s games

El Toro (4-3, 2-0) vs. Huntington Beach (4-3, 1-1)

(at Huntington Beach High, 7 p.m.)

Huntington picked up its first Sea View League win last week by defeating host Northwood, 22-15, and a win over El Toro in its homecoming game will keep the Oilers in the thick of the title chase.

Johnny Olivé rushed for a pair of touchdowns, and Jimmy Elby took in a one-yard touchdown pass from Bobby Duarte in the win over Northwood.

El Toro won its first two league games handily over Northwood and Woodbridge, teams the Chargers figured to beat. El Toro had defeated Northwood 26-7 in a league opener on Oct. 12.

Last week, the Chargers raced past Woodbridge, 56-20. Jai Morris ran for 211 yards and five touchdowns and Aaron Grey accounted for 185 yards of offense and scored twice to lead the rout.

Last year’s score: Chargers 20, Oilers 17

Ocean View (5-2, 1-1) vs. Saddleback (0-7, 0-2)

(at Santa Ana Bowl, 7 p.m.)

Ocean View had its four-game win streak snapped by Segerstrom last week and will look to get back on the winning track in Golden West League play against winless Saddleback.

Known for a few comeback victories in the past month, the Seahawks again managed to stage a big comeback, digging themselves out of a 14-0 first-quarter hole to tie the score, only to see the Jaguars score the game’s final 21 points en route to a 35-14 win. Kyle Walker rushed for both Ocean View touchdowns.

Saddleback dropped its seventh game of the season last Saturday by falling 27-7 to Santa Ana. Reggie Viatolo rushed for 179 yards and a touchdown to lead the Roadrunners.

Last year’s score: Roadrunners 35, Seahawks 13
