Turnovers rampant in tie

A turnover-marred Midget Division game between the Huntington Beach Chargers and Saddleback Valley ended in a 14-14 tie Saturday as the Pop Warner Football regular season came to an end.

Huntington (3-4) overcame five turnovers to avoid defeat.

Saddleback converted the second Chargers turnover into its first touchdown to take a 6-0 lead. Huntington finally got on the scoreboard last in the half when Isaiah Lumbruno ran a sweep right and stretched the ball into the end zone with one second remaining.

In the second half, Saddleback returned the turnover favor when a fumble on the second play from scrimmage set up Huntington’s final score. The Chargers’ ensuing drive, led by Lumbruno, Tyler Baker, David Pena and Donald Rice, culminated in Christopher Olgivie’s TD run and Brandon Gauweiler’s two-point conversion kick that gave Huntington a 14-6 lead.

Saddleback’s following quick drive and two-point conversion tied the score.

The Chargers begin playoff action at 7 p.m. Saturday at Garden Grove.

Pee Wee Division

Green Chargers 28, Costa Mesa 0

The Green Chargers gave another dominant performance as they shutout the Mustangs in a first-round playoff game.

On Huntington’s first drive of the game, 35-yard runs by Treavon Coley and Elijah Herrera set up Coley’s touchdown run.

The Green Chargers opened up a 14-0 lead at the half on another Coley touchdown.

In the second half, Brodie Barton threw touchdown passes to Andrew Bogard and Tyler MacLeod. Coley and Bogard had interceptions.

Canyon Hills 14, Gold Chargers 0

Canyon Hills scored a pair of first-half touchdowns and made them stand as the Saints defeated the host Gold Chargers.

Junior Mighty Mite Division

Huntington 27, Saddleback Valley 13

The Chargers overcame a Saddleback Valley touchdown drive and defeated the Bears.

Huntington scored on Griffin O’Connor’s touchdown pass to Cameron Gonzales, and the teams went into the half knotted at 7-7.

The Chargers gained a golden scoring opportunity by recovering a fumble on the second-half kickoff at the Bears’ 20-yard line. They converted the turnover into points as Chase Ault rushed for the go-ahead score. On its next series, Huntington went up 20-7 on Joseph Flannery’s touchdown run.

After the Bears trimmed the lead to 20-13, Zachary Edsell put the game away when he returned an onside kick for a touchdown.

Junior Pee Wee Division

Green Chargers 18, North Long Beach 0

Huntington racked up its seventh-straight shutout and eighth-consecutive win by routing North Long Beach.

The play of Seth Fox, Ryan Clapp, Miguel Morieda, Barrett Kelly, Zach Scrivner, Chris Scrivner, Jason Vaught, Kevin Kimble, Jordan Palomino, Stevie Hernandez and Dylan Sneed, helped pave the way to victory.

White Chargers 27, Montebello 20

The White Chargers extended their win streak to four games with a comeback victory over the Gold Sharks at Montebello.

Huntington fell behind 20-7 at the half, getting its lone touchdown on a big, 79-yard run by Jared Strickler. In the second half, the White Chargers got a fumble recovery by Seth Leischner and interception by Sean Storm.

The Chargers went into the lead behind a pair of TD runs by Hunter Simmons, which gave Huntington a 21-20 lead with six minutes remaining.

Ben Poploskie put the game away when he took in a 45-yard touchdown pass from Strickler with 1:40 remaining.

Poploskie recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff to keep Montebello’s offense down.

Gold Chargers 20, La Habra 7

Brandon Lazslo recovered a fumble on the opening kickoff and then bolted 45 yards to the end zone on the first play from scrimmage, launching the Gold Chargers to their second win of the season.

The teams were tied 7-7 at the half but Lazslo scored on two runs in the second half to secure the Gold Chargers’ lead.

Others key offensive contributions came from Grant Lowry, Isiah Christon and Alec Lowman. Mitchell King had two successful onside kicks that ended in fumble recoveries.

On defense, Lowman, King, Brandon Lazslo, Nathan Lazslo, Sam Cooper, Griffin Leener, Lewis Bray, Zackry Gross, Keith McCord, Kyle Alexander and Jacob Price, helped shut down the Lions offense.
