Fallout from the fires and windy conditions that have ravaged Orange, San Diego and Los Angeles counties since Sunday affected outdoor athletic practices and events earlier this week for the fall prep teams at Edison, Huntington Beach, Marina and Ocean View.

Team practices at Ocean View were canceled Monday, Seahawks Athletic Director Tim Mennealy said, adding that the Golden West League girls’ golf prelims and finals, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, also were canceled.

At Edison, the only athletic event scheduled Monday, a girls’ junior varsity field hockey game, was canceled.

Tuesday’s cancellations included a girls’ tennis match at home against Newport Harbor in addition to a field hockey match at Fountain Valley, Athletic Director Bruce Belcher said.

But Belcher also said the Sunset League girls’ golf finals at Green River Golf Club, located just downstream from Prado Dam in Corona, went on schedule Tuesday.

“Everything was geared down Monday, and all coaches and teams were to use caution,” he said of team practices. “It’s a day-by-day thing right now.”

Practices Monday at Marina also were scaled to “low-level physical exertion,” Athletic Director Paul Renfrow said.

There were no athletic events scheduled Monday but the girls’ tennis match scheduled for Tuesday at Los Alamitos was canceled.

At Huntington Beach, a boys’ water polo match at Mission Viejo Monday was postponed.

On Tuesday, a girls’ tennis match against Northwood, a field hockey match against Bonita and the Sea View League girls’ golf finals, all were canceled, Athletic Director Roy Miller said. Oilers fall athletic teams went through limited workouts Monday and Tuesday, including “walk-through” practices indoors, Miller said.
