Water polo games rescheduled

The Newport Harbor High boys’ water polo team’s Sunset League game against Los Alamitos, postponed due to safety concerns from the local fires, has been rescheduled for Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Newport Harbor.

Both teams are undefeated in league. The Sailors (18-2) are ranked No. 1 in the CIF Southern Section Division I coaches’ poll, while Los Alamitos is ranked No. 6.

Newport Harbor Coach Jason Lynch said the last round of Sunset League boys’ water polo games has also been rescheduled, for Thursday. This gives the boys a day in between their final two league games.

Newport Harbor is now scheduled to play Marina on Thursday at 6 p.m. in its league finale. The Sailors are then scheduled to end the regular season with a game at The Bishop’s School of La Jolla on Friday.

No. 5-ranked Corona del Mar (14-6) has had its Pacific Coast League showdown against University postponed until Friday, but that may interfere with tournament plans. CdM Coach Barry O’Dea, looking for more game experience prior to the CIF playoffs, said he may try to get the Sea Kings into the Servite-hosted Hank Vellecamp Tournament, which also begins Friday.

CdM and Newport Harbor were originally set to participate in the TruWest Memorial Cup Invitational tournament this weekend, before being told to stay home Thursday by the Newport-Mesa Unified School District.

The Gray Lunde frosh-soph boys’ water polo tournament, named for the Newport Harbor freshman water polo player who died of a congenial heart defect in 1995, has also been rescheduled.

The tournament, which was originally scheduled for this weekend, will now take place Nov. 2-3, with games at both Newport Harbor and CdM.

Costa Mesa, which has a doubleheader against Orange and Fountain Valley on Monday at Orange High, will play at crosstown rival Estancia on Wednesday in what was supposed to be the Mustangs’ season finale. Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor said Friday that a makeup date and time for the Mustangs’ league game against Laguna Beach still has not been determined.

Sage Hill is scheduled to play at Laguna Beach on Tuesday. The Lightning will then face Estancia in both schools’ Orange Coast League finale on Thursday, at CdM at 6:15 p.m.
