MENIFEE — Newport Harbor High edged Long Beach Wilson, 427-429, for third place at Menifee Lakes Country Club Monday.

The Sailors, who completed their highest finish in Coach Scott Tarnow’s eight years, advances to the CIF Southern Section Regional Championships to be played Monday at Dove Canyon Country Club.

Junior Tiffany Kim led Newport Harbor with her 11-over-par 81. Sophomore Lauren Draganza followed at 84, then sophomore Ali Thomas with an 85 and senior Kendall Horn with 86. Sophomore Morgan Moody finished with 91.

“To advance is pretty special with 25 teams there and most of them were league champs or runner-up,” Tarnow said. “Marina was [the Sunset League] champ and they didn’t advance.”

Ayala won the Divisional title, coming in with 4-1. Los Altos was second with 412.

Southern Section Southern

Division Championships

CHINO — Corona del Mar High ended its season with a team score of 460 on the Butterfield Stage Course at El Prado Golf Course Monday.

Freshman Monica Phan led the Sea Kings, shooting 87 on the par-72 course, sophomore Tess Crane (88), senior Katharine Hanson (94), junior Kelly Moorhead (95) and sophomore Ashley Varner (96) also competed for Corona del Mar.

Torrance won the Southern Division title with a score of 369.

Moorhead, who finished fifth in the Pacific Coast League, will compete at the CIF Southern Individual Regional at Seven Hills Golf Club in Hemet on Thursday at 8 a.m.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Sage Hill 16, Capistrano

Valley Christian 2

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Junior Laney Tucker, along with sophomores Dominique Moore and Samantha Murray swept in singles for the Lightning in the Academy League match Monday.

Moore did not drop a game in her three wins, while Tucker and Murray gave up just two each. The Sage Hill doubles team of junior Jaclyn Smrecek and junior Isa-Marie Taskinen also swept at No. 2 doubles to help the Lightning improve to 12-4, 8-0 in league.

Capistrano Valley Christian dropped to 6-8, 2-5.

Sage Hill, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division IV, will play against St. Margaret’s at San Clemente Tennis Club for the league title Wednesday at 3 p.m. If the Lightning win they will win the title outright. A loss and they will clinch at least a share of the championship.

Singles – Tucker (SH) def. Stoker, 6-1, def. Sharp, 6-0, def. LaFrance, 6-1; Moore (SH) won, 6-0, 6-0, 6-0; Murray (SH) won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-0.

Doubles – Goodman-Cochran (SH) def. Ruiz-Mennace, 6-4, def. Sherwood-Drizym, 7-5, lost to Zampas-Montez, 2-6; Smrecek-Choi (SH) won, 6-2, 6-1, 6-0; Taskinen-Chang lost, 1-6, won, 6-2, 7-5.

Estancia 14, Calvary Chapel 4

COSTA MESA — Junior Ellie Edles and sophomore Kendra Fisher swept in singles for Estancia in the Orange Coast League match at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center Monday.

The Estancia No. 1 doubles team of senior Abby Koff and junior Jennifer Johnston won their three sets, as did junior Erin Rodman and freshman Laurel Hinson.

Estancia (12-4, 5-1) will play host to Laguna Beach in an attempt to win a share of the league title Wednesday at 3 p.m. Estancia and Laguna Beach will not play each other three times this season because of the poor air quality from the Southern California fires, so Wednesday is their last matchup. Laguna Beach enters the match undefeated in league.

Singles – Edles (E) def. Wong, 6-0, def. Clark, 6-0, def. Ramirez, 6-1; Fisher (E) won, 6-0, 6-2, 6-1; Ramdath-Maharaj (E) lost, 1-6, 0-6, 1-6.

Doubles – Koff-Johnston (E) def. Padillo-Birt, 6-1, def. Kazarian-Morris, 6-0, def. Adams-Kalubnikin, 6-2; Rodman-Hinson (E) won, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1; Corona-Plascencia (E) lost, 0-6, won, 6-2, 6-3.

LOS ALAMITOS — Alex McIntosh won twice in singles for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Monday.

The Sailors dropped to 11-5, 4-4 in league.

Newport Harbor will play at Edison today.

Doubles – Sowers-Kahn (NH) lost to Moore-Bales, 3-6, lost to Lin-Gahungu, 4-6, def. Powers-Zambos, 6-4; Shea-Sigalos (NH) lost, 3-6, 2-6, won, 6-3; Small-Cernius (NH) lost, 0-6, 3-6, won, 6-3.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Edison

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Seniors Megan Munce and Alex Penewell had 10 kills to help lead the Sailors to a 25-12, 15-19, 25-18 Sunset League victory Monday.

Munce also added six digs, while Jamie Heenan had three kills and six aces. Junior Jennifer Palmquist chipped in with three kills and three blocks, and senior setter Alesha Young had 25 assists and 13 digs for the Sailors (20-3, 7-1 in league).

Newport Harbor plays at Los Alamitos today at 5:30 p.m. for first place in league.

Brethren Christian

NEWPORT COAST — Sophomore outside hitter Lindsey Kish had 16 kills and one ace to lead the Lightning to a 24-26, 25-17, 30-28, 22-25, 15-3 Academy League victory Monday.

Junior Sarah Mace added seven kills and five aces, while sophomore Hayden Furey had five kills and five aces for Sage Hill. Lightning sophomore setter Hanalynn Hunt contributed 37 assists.

Sage Hill plays today at home against Capistrano Valley Christian.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Costa Mesa 12, Orange 10

ORANGE — Cody Serrano and Skyler Twohig each scored seven goals Monday, leading the Mustangs to two nonleague wins that were make-up games at Orange High Monday.

Serrano notched six goals in a 10-9 win over Fountain Valley that Costa Mesa Coach Justin Taylor described as dramatic. Dustin Serrano blocked a last-second shot for the Mustangs to secure the win. Costa Mesa was down two men during the play, as two players were ejected in the final minute, one with 62 seconds left, the other with 24 ticks remaining.

The Mustangs held Fountain Valley zero for seven on the man advantage. Sam Edman scored the go-ahead goal with 71 seconds left.

Twohig scored six goals and the Mustangs (14-10) were six for six on the power play to defeat Orange, 12-10, earlier in the day.

Costa Mesa plays host to Laguna Beach today at 3 p.m.
