Water polo teams to play in weekend event
The top women’s water polo players in the nation will compete this weekend in the 2007 Speedo Top 40 tournament at the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos.
Among the players is every member of the United States gold-medal squad from the 2007 Pan American Games.
The athletes were brought together by special invitation, open tryout or prior inclusion on the women’s national team.
The athletes have been divided into four equal teams that will battle it out for the tournament championship. The teams will be led by coaches from the Olympic Development Program.
Brenda Villa, Heather Petri and Natalie Golda are three U.S. Olympics athletes competing at the event.
In addition to the competition, the festival also includes an open tournament for women’s club water polo squads. Huntington Beach Water Polo Club and Golden West Club are two local teams competing in the 16-team field. The other 14 teams in the open tournament include the top four teams returning from 2006, New York, SET (El Toro) Commerce, and SOCAL (Tustin), plus teams from Oceanside, Northshore (Solana Beach), Monrovia, Vista, Los Alamitos, South Irvine, Irvine, CHAWP (Chino Hills), Santa Barbara and Florida Coast (Miami).
The tournament begins at 9 a.m. Friday and runs through Sunday. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.usawaterpolo.org.
