TOMAN EARNS HONORS

Megan Toman, a former Newport Harbor High volleyball player, was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week on Oct. 23, making it the second time she’s earned the honor while at Brown University this season.

Toman was the Bears’ top outside hitter last week with a 4.11 kills per game average. She leads Brown with 3.54 kills per game.

In Ivy League play, she is eighth with 3.51 kills per game and eighth with 0.43 service aces per game.

UCI’S MURPHY LAUDED

UC Irvine Junior men’s soccer midfielder Matt Murphy has been named the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team.

Murphy, a political science major, leads UCI in scoring this season with seven goals and two assists. Murphy was named a third-team preseason All-American by College Soccer News and was the 2006 Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year.

In order to be eligible for the award a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his career and be at least a sophomore academically. He also must have completed at least one full year at their current school.
