WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Pacific

STOCKTON — A strong, balanced attack helped the Anteaters post a 30-26, 25-30, 21-30, 30-22, 15-12, triumph in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman had a match-high 24 kills and hit .338, while adding 12 digs for the winners.

Senior middle blocker Kristin Kelley had 10 kills, 11 block assists and hit .474, while freshman outside hitter Kari Pestolesi chipped in 14 kills and 19 digs.

Sophomore setter Taryn Robertson amassed 52 assists and 11 digs, while junior libero Devon Sutherland had 26 digs.

UCI improved to 19-8, 9-3 in conference, while the Tigers fell to 14-8, 7-6. The win creates a three-game cushion between the third-place Anteaters and the fourth-place team with five conference matches to play for UCI.

UCI posted an 18.5-4 advantage in team blocks and hit .417 as a team in the fifth game to finish .266 for the match.

UOP had five players post double-figure kills, but hit only .179 as a team for the match.

UCI plays host to Cal State Fullerton Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Crawford Court.

Fresno Pacific def. Vanguard

FRESNO — The Lions were swept, 32-30, 30-26, 30-25, in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday on the Sunbirds’ court.

Kelsey Wirt had 12 kills and fellow sophomore Heather DeJongh had 11 to lead the Lions (10-13, 8-10 in conference).

Alexandra Griffiths had 10 digs for Vanguard.

Fresno Pacific improved to 26-1, 16-1.

Conference Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — The Orange Coast College men’s team lost, 15-8, to host Golden West in the title game Saturday.

Sean Cruz scored four goals for the Pirates and Casey Satchell added two.

Drew Soria and Nick Martinazzi had one goal apiece for OCC.

The OCC women’s team defeated Saddleback, 14-8, in the fifth-place game Saturday.

Sophomore DeeJaye Trobman, a Newport Harbor High product, had five goals, while freshmen Keeley McCormack and Samantha Lane added two apiece for the Pirates.

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Eddie Erazo won the 200-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 46.42 seconds and the 200 backstroke (1:47.04) to pace the Anteaters men on the second day of competition Saturday at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.

Senior Chelsea Nagata and sophomore Lyndsay DePaul each won two women’s events for UCI. Nagata won the 200 individual medley (2:05.59) and the 100 freestyle (51.77). DePaul won the 200 fly (1:59.41) and the 500 free (4:52.23).

The UCI women went 7-1 at the two-day event.

The UCI men went 4-4 on the weekend.

The Anteaters return to action Saturday when they visit Arizona for a nonconference dual meet.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 13, Pacific 7

STOCKTON — Senior Tim Hutten scored a game-high five goals to pace the No. 5-ranked Anteaters in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory Saturday.

Colin Mello, Andrew Dunn and Cole Bitter added two goals each for UCI (10-8, 3-2 in the MSPF). Senior goalie Matt Garcia had seven saves.

Pacific, ranked No. 13, fell to 14-15, 1-5.

MEN’S SOCCER

Cal State Fullerton 3,

UC Irvine 1

IRVINE — The Anteaters played the final 85 minutes a man down in the Big West Conference loss Saturday at UCI.

UCI junior defender Kyle Schmid was given a red card at the 4:58 mark, and Cal State Fullerton (7-8-2, 2-5-2 in conference) took advantage. Michael Farfan scored in the 16th minute, followed by a goal from Gabriel Farfan in the 33rd minute.

UCI (6-6-4, 1-5-2) pulled within one on Matt Murphy’s penalty kick in the 53rd minute, but Gabriel Farfan scored again to put it out of reach.

Greg Larson had four saves for the Anteaters, who return to action Wednesday when they visit UC Riverside.
