IRVINE — Freshman outside hitter Kari Pestolesi had a match-high 23 kills but the ’Eaters lost, 30-27, 20-30, 30-23, 31-29, in a Big West Conference match Wednesday at Crawford Court.

Junior outside hitter Lauren Kellerman had 18 kills and senior middle blocker Kristin Kelley added 11 for the Anteaters (19-9, 9-4 in conference). UCI junior libero Devon Sutherland had 22 digs and sophomore setter Taryn Robertson had 17 digs and 52 assists.

Brittany Moore had a team-high 22 kills for Cal State Fullerton (12-13, 6-7).

UCI plays host to UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at 7 at Crawford Court.

Turtle Bay Resort Invitational

KAHUKU, Hawaii — The UC Irvine men’s golf team finished second to Tennessee in the tournament that ended Wednesday.

UCI had a three-round total of 43-under-par 821, 21 strokes behind the Volunteers.

Anteaters junior Sean Shahi tied for medalist honors with a 16-under total of 200, including a final-round 68. Sophomore John Chin finished 10th at 204, senior Kenny Kim was 18th at 206, junior Tim Cha 51st at 213 and freshman Bryan Harris placed 66th at 215.

Coach Paul Smolinski’s Anteaters have now opened their season with four top-five finishes in five tournaments.

UC Irvine 18, UC San Diego 6

IRVINE — Anteaters senior Tim Hutten scored a career-high nine goals to lift fifth-ranked UC Irvine in the home nonconference game Wednesday night.

Senior Colin Mello and redshirt freshman Brandon Johnson each added three goals for UCI (11-8), which got 14 saves from senior goalie Matt Garcia.

No. 14 UC San Diego fell to 10-15.

UCI hosts No. 6 Pepperdine Friday at 7 p.m. in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game.

RIVERSIDE — The Big West Conference game Wednesday produced the Anteaters’ fourth straight loss.

UCI (6-7-4, 1-6-2 in conference) fell behind in the 13th minute and never recovered. It’s the fourth time this season UCI has been shut out.

Freshman goalie Pat Barton had one save for UCI, which plays host to UC Riverside Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a makeup of a match postponed due to poor air quality.

The win negated a chance for UCI to climb out of last place in the seven-team conference and improved UC Riverside’s record to 5-5-6, 2-3-4.
