Huntington Beach detectives are asking for information in the investigation of a man accused of a 1984 murder and sexual assault of a Huntington Beach woman.

Police are seeking people who knew Gerald Su Go, now 51, charged with the murder of Elizabeth May Hoffschneider while committing burglary, robbery and sexual assault. Go, a Canadian citizen, was arrested Oct. 23 by Toronto police and remains in custody as U.S. prosecutors negotiate for his extradition.

The initial case made against him is based on DNA evidence.

Go appears to have lived in Orange County from January 1984 through May 1987 and worked as a veterinary assistant at pet hospitals, according to police. Anyone who had contact with him over that period is asked to call Det. Mike Reilly or Det. Patrick Ellis at (714) 375-5066.

Police also released a 1986 mug shot of Go, who recently served a prison term for an assault and attempted rape in that year. He fled the country in 1987 before he was sentenced, and served two and a half years of his five year sentence after finally being caught at La Guardia Airport in New York in 2004, Police Lt. Dave Bunetta said.

No one was arrested in the 1980s investigation of Hoffschneider’s death; the crime was recently linked to Go based on physical and DNA evidence that could now be analyzed by the Orange County Sheriff’s crime lab, police said. Go was required to provide DNA samples as a condition of parole earlier this year, which put his genetic information in a database of recently convicted felons.

When released this fall, Go was deported to Canada. By the time the DNA match led to a warrant, he was already out of the U.S. Because he is a Canadian citizen, he faces extradition proceedings that could take years if he fights them. If convicted of the charges, Go faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without possibility of parole.
