Liverpool edges past in close game

Liverpool United, the under-11 plus boys’ team from AYSO Region 56, rebounded from a recent one-goal loss to Newport Beach to defeat the HB Cobras, 5-3.

Forward Grant Mooney recorded a hat trick to lead the victory.

The Cobras converted an early penalty kick to take a 1-0 lead, but the advantage didn’t last long.

Liverpool United evened the score when midfielder Jack Slavik sent a pass to George Vournas, whose through ball was sent into the net by Drew Truxaw.

It was Truxaw’s third goal in the past two games.

Later in the first half, Truxaw was brought down on a charge into the penalty box and was awarded a penalty kick.

Mooney took the kick and was denied, but he corralled a loose ball and scored on a rebound shot to give Liverpool United its first lead at 2-1.

A few minutes later, Liverpool United was able to take a 3-1 lead into the half after a pass from Truxaw was volleyed into the net by Mooney.

The Cobras struck first in the second half as a quick goal made the score 3-2.

On a free kick later in the half, Gavin Kirkreit set the ball over the Cobra’s defensive wall, which Mooney converted into his third goal and put Liverpool United on top, 4-2. The Cobras again drew to within a goal (4-3) on an impressive cross that lead to a header.

Mooney, however, helped give Liverpool United breathing room when his cross found an open Connor Venanzi who scored to increased the lead back up to two goals, 5-3.

In the second half, halfbacks Truman Bazer and Connor Saeman helped Liverpool United keep control of the game.

Thunder 2, Real Deal 0

Carley Boydston scored the first goal and Addy Price the second, as the Thunder shut out the Real Deal.

Boydston’s goal was set up on a pass from Simone Corkett, and midfielders Lauren Anderson and Athena Hillas paved the way for Price’s score.

Thunder 5, Blink Lightning 1

The Thunder made it a perfect weekend Sunday by winning their second match in two days.

Midfielder Simone Corkett charged the net and scored the first goal to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead, but Blink Lightning answered quickly by scoring the tying goal behind the play of Kelsey Callanan, Morgan Renaud, Tiffany Imhoff, Sarah Chacon and Elana Abe.

Dana Conlisk, assisted by Shelby Rawlinson, scored the go-ahead goal for Thunder. Conlisk had a huge offensive outburst in the final five minutes of the match by scoring three goals, which allowed the Thunder to pull away.
