Fashion Island features parking-space counters

Fashion Island opened a new three-story parking garage with electronic signs telling drivers how many spaces are available and where to find them.

The structure, which opened Wednesday in a space formerly occupied by a surface parking lot, resides by the intersection of Santa Rosa and Newport Center drives and features approximately 1,100 spaces.

The sign by the front entrance indicates whether the structure is full, while signs inside indicate how many spots are available on each level.

The Irvine Co., which owns Fashion Island, has implemented structures with electronic signage at the nearby Irvine Spectrum Center.
