Grants allow P.E. experts to lead classes for third-graders
Newport-Mesa school district third-graders now have physical education classes led by a specialist, just as their fourth- through sixth-grade peers do.
Their weekly classes from experts in physical education and motivation come thanks to $315,000 state grants, which should continue annually.
“They have a variety of tricks up their sleeves as far as fun activities that get students motivated and get their heart rates up,” said Bonnie Swan, director of elementary education.
The funds were allocated through nine grants awarded to the district. Newport-Mesa was originally awarded 15 grants of $35,000, but statewide all such awards were rescinded, reviewed and then redistributed, officials said. The money is enough for three full-time specialists, giving the district nine total.
