WALNUT — Sophomore guards Courtney Ford and Katie Kissee had 18 and 17 points, respectively, to power the Pirates to a big win over the host Mounties in a Mt. San Antonio College Tournament first-round game Friday night.
OCC shocked Mt. SAC, the two-time defending state champion that is ranked No. 1 in the state.
Guard Rachael Maulit added eight points, and forwards Sarah Schmidt (one three-pointer) and Simone Ibbotson each had seven for the Pirates (2-0), who had a four-point lead at halftime and narrowly outscored Mt. SAC (0-1) in the second half as well.
OCC has a second-round game at the tournament tonight at 7 against Solano.

IRVINE — A Kelly Cochran layup pulled the Anteaters even, 46-46, with 7:53 left in the game, but the Aggies scored the next seven points in 41 seconds to take command in the nonconference opener for both teams Friday at Crawford Court.
UCI went on a 12-3 run to pull to within 60-58, but the Aggies pulled away.
Cochran, a junior, had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead the hosts, who received 11 points and nine boards from senior Stephanie Duda.
Coach Molly Tuter’s Anteaters forced 26 turnovers and committed just 19, but lost the rebounding battle, 54-35.
UCI shot 33.3% from the field (21 of 63), while New Mexico State, out of the Western Athletic Conference, shot 40% from the feild (26 of 65).
The Anteaters return to action Thursday night when the visit the University of Utah in Salt Lake City.

FULLERTON — The Anteaters couldn’t hold a one-goal lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation, losing a heartbreaking Big West Tournament semifinal game Friday at Cal State Fullerton.
No. 4-seeded UCI scored the game’s first goal in the 80th minute, when freshman midfielder Nikki Forrest knocked in a loose ball inside the 18-yard box. But Brianna Buffington of top-seeded Cal State Fullerton scored seven minutes later to send the game into overtime.
Cal State Fullerton’s Kristen Boujos then scored a rebound goal in the second overtime, at the 104:10 mark, to end the game and the Anteaters’ season.
Danielle de Seriere had seven saves for UC Irvine (11-7-2). The Titans will face third-seeded Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, led by Costa Mesa High product Sharon Day, in Sunday’s championship game.

VENTURA — Freshman guard Eric O’Mahony had a team-high 16 points for the Pirates in the fifth-place semifinal of the Ventura Tournament Friday night.
O’Mahony made three three-pointers for OCC (0-2). Freshman forward Brian Helmuth had 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Pirates, who made just 22 of 75 field-goal attempts (29%).
San Diego City (1-1) had five players in double figures, led by Nehemiah Simpkins with 18.
Orange Coast plays at home against Moorpark on Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the Pirates’ home opener.

COSTA MESA — Sophomore Jacquelin Reed posted 10 kills and 17 digs to help the Pirates sweep, 30-25, 30-28, 30-25, in their Orange Empire Conference matchup Friday.
Freshmen Kayla Cutler had 17 digs for OCC (15-5, 9-4 in conference) and Emily Lyon led the Pirates in assists with 34.
Orange Coast will play host to Irvine Valley on Wednesday.

IRVINE — Anteaters senior Colin Mello had the game-tying and game-winning goals in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Friday at UCI.
Mello scored up top with 3 minutes, 39 seconds remaining in the contest to tie the score for the fifth-ranked ’Eaters.
He then scored a power-play goal with 1:16 left off a rebound from Brandon Johnson’s shot.
Mello had four goals for UCI (11-8, 4-2 in conference), while Tim Hutten had two and Matt Garcia totaled six saves.
No. 6 Pepperdine (22-8, 1-5) was paced by Adam Hewko with five goals.
UC Irvine plays Stanford today at noon in its home finale.
