Hoag diabetes program receives $1M donation
Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian will expand its diabetes programs to provide broader care to afflicted residents, thanks to Dick and Mary Allen’s $1 million gift to the Hoag Diabetes Center.
Next to Hoag Hospital’s main campus, the center will focus on meeting the challenges of access to care faced by many in Orange County.
The center will also have a special emphasis on pediatric services to reach a traditionally underserved population.
“On any given day, between 15 and 20% of Hoag Hospital’s inpatients have diabetes, and some of them are not even aware that they have it until they are admitted,” Dr. Kris Iyer, an endocrinologist and fellow type I diabetic, stated in a news release. “This fact demonstrates the need for heightened diabetes education and care in our community.
“Through Hoag Diabetes Center, we will be able to expand the availability of diabetes care in order to help meet the growing community need.”
