JACKSON, Tenn. — The No. 2-ranked Lions suffered their first loss of the season against the No. 8-ranked school from Tennessee in the second game of round-robin play at the Rotary Classic at Union University.

Vanguard led, 43-40, at halftime, but could not hold on as they shot just 36.8% from the field (14 of 38) after intermission, while the designated home team made 16 of 29 second-half field-goal tries (55.2%), including seven of 12 from three-point range (58.3%) to prevail.

Freed-Hardeman, also nicknamed the Lions, made 12 of 23 three-point tries in the game (52.2%), while Vanguard was a mere eight of 30 from beyond the arc (26.7%).

Vanguard senior Jessica Richter, the reigning NAIA Player of the Year, had a team-high 16 points, but was five of 21 from the field, including one of nine from three-point distance. Richter added four steals, two assists and shared the team rebounding lead with juniors Marissa Rivera and Lauren Gregory, all of whom collected seven boards.

Freshman point guard Sarah Boyd had 14 points and a team-best three assists for Vanguard, which received 13 points from Rivera.

Boyd was six of nine from the field.

Freed-Hardeman received all but nine of its points from four starters, led by Jana Cross who scored 24.

Cross was eight of 12 from the field, while fellow forward Meredith McLemore was eight of 10 from the field on her way to 19 points.

Megan Thompson added 18 points and Kristal Edney had 15 for the winners, who improved to 4-1.

Vanguard will close out the tournament tonight at 7 p.m. against host Union, the top-ranked team in the NAIA preseason poll.

SANTA BARBARA — Sophomore middle blocker did not have a hitting error to lead the visiting Anteaters to a 30-26, 30-28, 30-26, Big West Conference sweep Friday.

Ellis had 10 kills in 13 attempts for a .769 hitting percentage to pace the Anteaters (21-9, 11-4 in the Big West).

UCSB fell to 10-18, 5-10.

SWIMMING

UC Irvine/Nike Cup LONG BEACH — UC Irvine sophomore Lindsay DePaul and senior Chelsea Nagata both won events in school-record times on the first day of the event Friday at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

DePaul won the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, .36 seconds to break her own record in the event.

Nagata won the 50 freestyle in 23.03 seconds, bettering her own previous school record.

MEN’S SOCCER

NORTHRIDGE — The Matadors had a 2-0 lead, before the Anteaters halved the deficit in the Big West Conference game Friday at Matador Soccer Field.

The Anteaters got on the board in the 74th minute as freshman Jonathan Kurup crossed the ball to junior Rafael Macedo who crossed the ball back over to freshman Amani Walker who slid the ball into the net.

UCI fell to (6-8-5 , 1-7-3), while the Matadors improved to 6-7-6, 2-5-4.

The Matadors opened the scoring in the ninth minute as Devin Deldo deflected in a cross from Sunghyun Kim.

Matt Tracy put Northridge up, 2-0, in the 18th minute on a free kick from 28 yards out.

Freshman goalkeeper Pat Barton had five saves for the ’Eaters.

The Anteaters closes their season Sunday at home at 1 p.m. against visiting UC Davis at Anteater Stadium.
