JACKSON, Tenn. — The much-anticipated meeting between No. 2-ranked Vanguard and No. 1-ranked Union was canceled Saturday night after power went out on the Union campus late in the first half.

The two teams waited 90 minutes, before canceling the contest, which will not be replayed.

UC Irvine 83

OREM, Utah — The host Wolverines’ 6-foot-1 junior center Robyn Fairbanks amassed 36 points and 15 rebounds in the nonconference game Saturday.

Fairbanks, who had averaged 16 points per game in the school’s first three games, went 15 of 26 from the field to help the winners (4-0) shoot 54.5% for the game (42 of 77).

UCI (0-2) made 18 of 36 first-half field-goal attempts to stay within 47-45 at intermission, but could not keep pace the final 20 minutes.

Senior forward Stephanie Duda led the Anteaters with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Senior Miranda Forry added 15 points for UCI, which defeated Utah Valley State, 89-75, last season.

UCI sophomore point guard Kirian Ishizaki was four for seven from the field to produce 11 points.

UCI returns home to play Cal State Bakersfield Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Bren Events Center.

Community College State Championships

FRESNO — Orange Coast College freshman Crystal Reed won the individual title, but the Pirates ended their string of six straight championships, as they finished second to Glendale at Woodward Park.

Reed finished in 17 minutes, 32 seconds, 27 seconds before second-place Tove Berg of Glendale. OCC freshman Cassie Mitchell finished eighth in 18:51.

The OCC men finished ninth, led by sophomore Brandon Babiracki, who was fifth in 20:37.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo def. UC Irvine

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Anteaters’ hopes for an NCAA at-large berth took a blow in the 27-30, 30-18, 30-22, 30-16 loss to the Big West Conference champion Saturday night.

Freshman Kari Pestolesi had a match-high 20 kills for UCI (21-10, 11-5 in conference), which finished third in the final Big West standings.

WOMEN’S SWIMMING

UC Irvine/Nike Cup

LONG BEACH — UC Irvine senior Chelsea Nagata won two more events Friday on the second day of the three-day event at Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Nagata won the 100-yard butterfly in 54.29 seconds and also won the 100 backstroke in 55.72. She won her first event in the meet Thursday.

Also Saturday, UCI sophomore Lyndsay DePaul won the 400 individual medley in 4:16.50.

MEN’S WATER POLO

USC 9, UC Irvine 7

LOS ANGELES — Senior Tim Hutten had a game-high five goals for UCI in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday at McDonalds Swim Stadium.

Hutten now has 63 goals this season.

No. 5-ranked UCI received nine saves from goalie Adam Garcia.

UCI fell to 12-10, 4-4 in conference, while No. 2 USC is now 15-2, 6-2.
