COSTA MESA — College of the Canyons ended OCC’s state championship run, as the visiting Cougars swept past the Pirates, 30-21, 31-29, 30-23 in the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs on Tuesday.

Eighth-seeded OCC (15-7), which was the two-time defending state champion, was led by sophomore outside hitter Jacqi Reed (13 kills, 10 digs, two solo blocks). Libero Kayla Cutler had nine digs and setter Emily Lyon added 26 assists.

Orange Coast had multiple chances to tie the game score at 1-1, but couldn’t hold a 25-20 advantage in Game 2. Ninth-seeded College of the Canyons (15-6) then jumped out to a 9-3 lead in Game 3 and won going away.

Sophomore standout Pricilla Bremer led the Cougars (15-6) with 20 kills. College of the Canyons also served well in the match, totaling 11 aces against the two-time defending state champs.

College of the Canyons moves on to play top-seeded Irvine Valley College.

UC Irvine 74, Cal State

Bakersfield 61

IRVINE — Senior forward Miranda Forry had a career-high 20 points, adding eight rebounds to lead the Anteaters to the nonconference victory Tuesday at the Bren Events Center.

Sophomore forward Kelly Cochran had 15 points and 10 rebounds for UCI (1-3), which was down by 11 points at halftime before outscoring Cal State Bakersfield, 46-22, in the second half. Senior forward Stephanie Duda added 11 points and 11 rebounds for the winners.

UC Irvine shot 52% (16 of 31) in the second half, while Cal State Bakersfield (2-2) could manage just 21% (6 of 28). With the score tied at 43-43, the Anteaters went on a 18-1 run to break the game open.

Naomi Johnson had 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, both team highs for Cal State Bakersfield. Kelley Tarver added 15 points.

The Anteaters play host to Sacramento State on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Bren Center.
