Edison girls’ runners headed for state meet

The Edison High girls’ cross-country team earned a spot in this weekend’s CIF State Meet in Fresno by finishing in fifth place in the Division II team standings Saturday at the CIF Southern Section finals at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut.

Edison qualified with 190 points. The overall team winner was Newport Harbor with 131 points.

Junior Hillary Hayes led the Edison contingent by placing third, overall, with a time of 17:38. Other finishes for the Chargers included junior Melisa Olgun (18:42) place 28th, senior Kirsten Linden (18:56) place 41st, junior Meghan Foley (19:12) place 56th, sophomore Dana Jorgensen (20:22) place 103rd, sophomore Casandra Owen (20:26) place 106th and sophomore Caroline Yin (20:29) place 110th.

Woodbridge senior Christine Babcock won the Division II race in 16:38. Brea senior Vanessa Hancock was second in 17:28.

In CIF-SS football playoff action:

Ocean View saw its season come to an end last Friday following a 55-7 first-round loss to host La Habra in the opening round of the Southern Division playoffs.

Dana Maley scored on a 13-yard run in the second half to account for Ocean View’s only score. The Seahawks, who finished in second-place in the Golden West League, ended their year at 7-4.

La Habra, co-champion of the Freeway League, improved to 10-0 and hosts San Gabriel in second-round game Friday.
