RETAIL ROUNDUP:

Fashion Island won’t quite be losing one of its original tenants when the At-Ease men’s boutique moves out in the coming months.

But it will be the closest thing.

At-Ease, which offers Burberry, Bobby Jones, Corbin and a number of other men’s lines, moved into the Irvine Co.’s shopping center in 1969, just two years after Fashion Island opened. Last year, the store added a second Newport Beach location in the Crystal Cove Promenade in Newport Coast — and the owners plan to combine the two into one next April.

The Crystal Cove location is set to close Dec. 31, with a sale beginning after Thanksgiving to get rid of the remaining stock.

Through the end of the year, the store, 8056 E. Coast Hwy., will offer 30% to 80% off on all its merchandise. The owners then plan to tear down the store and build a larger one in its place, which will house the Fashion Island inventory.

“We just feel that our store, the way it’s built, it’s gotten old and tired,” co-owner Ron Beale said. “We want to refresh and try to modernize the store a little bit so we don’t look like we’re 38 years old. The only place we had room to do that was in Crystal Cove.”

Beale said the At-Ease store at Crystal Cove measures about 2,000 square feet and that the new structure will be more than three times larger.

The Fashion Island location, he added, would likely remain open through March while the new store was being built.

“You get a little shopworn,” Beale said. “I guess we could have totally gutted this building and started all over again, but that’s cost-prohibitive.”

New men’s boutique hits Fashion Island

As one men’s boutique prepares to depart from Fashion Island, another debuted Tuesday.

Vilebrequin, which began in the French seaside town St. Tropez, opened its first Orange County location between Bloomingdale’s and Anthropologie.

The store offers men’s and boys’ swimwear including trunks, flip-flops, towels and sunglasses.

Prices for most items range from $135 to $265, with a matching “Fathers and Sons” collection ranging from $90 to $115.

Vilebrequin is open regularly from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. The store will remain open longer on select days during the holiday season. Call the store at (949) 287-0143 for a complete schedule.
