BERKELEY — Freshman driver Brandon Johnson scored the second of his two goals 1 minute, 50 seconds into sudden-death overtime to lift the No. 5-seeded Anteaters over the No. 4-seeded Bruins in the quarterfinals of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament at Spieker Aquatics Complex on Friday.

Johnson’s goal hit the crossbar and trickled into the left side of the cage as the Anteaters (13-10) moved on to face No. 1-ranked and top-seeded Cal, today at 2 p.m. in one semifinal.

USC faces Stanford in the other semifinal at 3:30 p.m.

UCI was able to send the match into sudden death when senior Tim Hutten scored with 30 seconds left in the second of the two regular three-minute overtime periods.

Anteaters senior Colin Mello led all scorers with four goals, Hutten had three and Johnson two.

Senior goalie Matt Garcia recorded 13 saves for UCI, which had lost its two previous meetings to the Bruins this season.

Scott Davidson led UCLA (19-7) with three goals and Krsto Sbutega added a pair. Goalie Chay Lapin had seven saves.

PALM DESERT — Sophomore Courtney Ford scored 22 points to lead the Pirates to the first-round win in the College of the Desert Tournament Friday.

OCC freshman Casey Gomez added 15 points, which included three three-pointers. Sophomores Katie Kissee and Britanny Taylor were also in doubles figures for the Pirates (4-1), scoring 11 and 10 points, respectively.

Orange Coast will face Mt. San Jacinto today at 5 p.m. in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

OAKLAND — Lindsay Rinke came off the bench to lead the Lions with 23 points in the Holy Names Thanksgiving Classic Friday.

Sarah Boyd added 21 points, while Lauren Gregory and Melissa Cook scored 18 points each for Vanguard (2-1). Cook grabbed 13 rebounds.
