IRVINE — Both Newport Harbor High and Corona del Mar lost in the quarterfinals of the 16-team tournament Friday at Irvine High.

That means the Sailors (28-4) and Sea Kings (17-8) will play each other in a fifth-place semifinal today at 11:15 a.m.

Top-seeded Newport Harbor was upset by Sunset League foe Los Alamitos, 6-5, while Corona del Mar fell to Agoura, 7-5.

Clinton Jorth and Colin McKibbin each had two goals, while Matt Russell added one for Newport Harbor against Los Alamitos. But the Division I champions couldn’t hold a 5-4 lead late as Los Alamitos scored the game-winning goal on a six-on-five.

Corona del Mar had upset Mater Dei in its first-round game, 7-5, but couldn’t quite pull off another win against Division IV champion Agoura. Max Bergeson had three goals in the quarterfinal loss, while Carter Taylor and Chris Cottrell added one each.

Jorth scored four goals for the Sailors in their 19-5 opening-round win over Cerritos. Zach Osadche added three goals.

When the Back Bay rivals play this morning, it will be their second meeting of the year. Newport Harbor defeated CdM, 14-9, in a nonleague game on Oct. 20.

The winner of today’s game will play either La Canada or Northwood in the Masters Tournament fifth-place game at 3:15 p.m.
