James Allen Phillipsz had a one-in-1,000 chance, but he did it.

As a member of the nationwide community college honor society Phi Theta Kappa, he already showed promise. Now Phillipsz, an OCC student, has another thing to brag about – he’s a published author.

Phillipsz’ work will be included in the 13th anniversary edition of “Nota Bene,” an annual publication highlighting 20 written works from community college students.

His submission, “When the Night Wind Blows,” was chosen from more than 1,000 entries. He, along with 18 others earned $500 scholarships.
