Mike Mayne, who collected 400 wins as baseball coach at Orange Coast College from 1977 to 1992, has been named pitching coach at Fresno State University, the school announced Wednesday.

Mayne, who guided OCC to six conference championships and one state title, reunites with Fresno State Coach Mike Batesole, who played for and coached with Mayne at OCC.

Batesole, preparing for his sixth season as head coach, guided the Bulldogs to back-to-back Western Athletic Conference tournament titles the last two seasons, a program first. The 2007 Bulldogs (36-23) were eliminated by Cal State Fullerton in the San Diego Regional.

Mayne replaces Ted Silva, who left to become pitching coach at UC Irvine.

Mayne inherits a highly regarded pitching staff led by first-team all-conference returners Justin Wilson and Tanner Scheppers, as well as second-team All-WAC honorees Clayton Allison and Brandon Burke.

Wilson, a junior left-hander, was 8-5 with a 3.19 earned-run average as a sophomore, when he struck out 105 in 107 2/3 innings.

Allison, a senior, was 10-5 with a 4.50 ERA last season. Burke, now a senior, was 4-7 with a 4.67 ERA last season, while Scheppers, now a sophomore, was 7-5 with a 4.74 ERA.

Other returners include senior reliever Jason Breckley, who was 3-1 with six saves while posting a 4.58 ERA.

Of the Bulldogs’ 36 wins last season, 34 were recorded by returners.

Mayne was 400-188-6 as OCC’s baseball coach, including a state title in 1980, the third and last time the program won the state crown.

After stepping down as baseball coach, Mayne spent 11 seasons as an assistant football coach at Orange Coast.

Mayne coached several future major leaguers, including his son Brent, a Costa Mesa High product who played 15 major league seasons as a catcher for seven teams.

Mike Mayne was named National Junior College Coach of the Year by the American Assn. of Collegiate Baseball Coaches, once during his tenure at OCC.

Both Mayne and Batesole did not return phone calls Wednesday.
