Newport’s Jorth named Sunset League’s best

Newport Harbor High senior Clinton Jorth has been named the Sunset League Player of the Year for boys’ water polo.

Jorth, a team captain and four-year varsity starter, had a team-high 81 goals and 29 steals for Newport Harbor this season. He helped the league champion Sailors (30-4, 5-0 in league) win their first CIF Southern Section Division I title since 2000.

Jorth was also a first-team All-Sunset League selection as a junior, as well as a first-team All-Sea View League selection in 2005 as a sophomore.

Also earning first-team All-Sunset League honors were seniors Colin McKibbin, Myles Christian and Brandon Parole.

McKibbin, a driver, had 78 goals for Newport Harbor, which went on to finish fifth at the CIF Southern Section Masters Tournament. Christian, the Tars’ goalie, had 255 saves on the season, averaging over eight per game.

Parole, a two-meter defender, had 38 goals and was second on the team with 23 steals.

Juniors David Linden and Andy Hayes, and sophomore Matt Russell, all earned second-team All-Sunset League honors. Linden and Russell, both two-meter men, scored 39 and 18 goals, respectively, for the Sailors.

Hayes, a driver, scored 19 goals.
