Girls’ soccer beats Tustin

The Laguna Beach girls’ soccer team officially opened its season Tuesday and defeated visiting Tustin, 2-1, at Guyer Field.

The Breakers dominated on the offensive end of the field, out-shooting the Tillers, 20-4.

Laguna’s only other action in the current season came Nov. 20 when they played host Laguna Hills to a scoreless match. Breakers goalie Lura Hills turned an outstanding performance in the match.

The Breakers return six starters and a large senior class, Laguna Coach Bill Rolfing said.

Against Tustin, a combination down the left wing created an early offensive opportunity and resulted in a 20-yard score by senior Laura Renault. Nikki Clark got the assist.

Courtney Capobianco, a college prospect, tallied an unassisted goal shortly before halftime to put Laguna up, 2-0.

Rolfing and Coach Jennifer Lundblad experimented with Laguna’s line-up in the second half, and the Breakers gave up a goal to the Tillers.

Junior Holden Penney anchored Laguna’s quick defensive line and Renault and senior Claire Rubel ran the midfield.

Laguna Beach opens its regular season at 6:15 p.m. today against visiting Mission Viejo at Guyer Field.

The Beakers held a scrimmage Nov. 19 and scored a 4-2 victory over host Dana Hills.

Laguna’s scoring was spread out evenly between Austin Hyden, Caine Fair, Bryce Healy and Tommy Hopper, each of whom scored once.

Alex Germano had five saves for the Breakers.

Laguna returns nine lettermen from last year’s team, led by four-year varsity starter and team captain Michael Tachovsky, who anchors the Breakers defense along with returning starters Fair, Sheldon Eaton, Noah Michelon and Ian Green.

Defense again figures to be a strength for the Breakers.

Offensively, Laguna is led by Hyden and other returning starters Edgar Rabadan, Tommy Hopper, David Clausen, Tim Folton and Bryce Healy.

Laguna reached the second round of the CIF Southern Section playoffs last year.
